i think its too late to introduce that Smokey is not the original Brother. I think at this point we got the answer: that Brother turned into Smokey and left his original Body behind. Smokey did not exist before this. Mother said that you would be turned into something worse than death if you went into the cave.. If it was another entity, Mother would have said that something worse than death would be unleashed instead of you getting turned into it.
However, I have said before (in relation to Locke's personality coming through) that even if you're not the original, that a "copy" is still enough to be the essence (or soul) of you, even if its not the exact same you. In this case, it continues on in the place you left off, so may as well be you. Same thing with Ghosts. They don't have your original body, but they're still you. So i think for all intents and purposes, assuming Smokey didn't exist before, MIB turned into Smokey. And if Smokey did exist before, but MIB's personality/soul is now the dominant personality/soul, than it is MIB.
The only way its not MIB is if there's some personality/soul underneath that is wearing an MIB-suit, much like Smokey wearing the Locke-suit. And while we may have a "sixth sense" reveal later, Jacob has been living with Smokey for 2000 years.
The only way I would have believed this were the case is if they gave Brother a name. That would give them the opportunity to pull a switcheroo on us later. As in: Oh, you always thought he was Locke, but turned out it was just Smokey pretending to be Locke. The fact that he still doesn't have a name means Brother and Smokey are the same person. Otherwise there is no reason for them to hold Brother's name from us.
