The freighter came to the island to kill Ben on Widmores orders we could clearly see Ben on the beach, so what's he here this time for? Right the war is one thing. The second reason he's there is to supply a means to get off the island. MiL needed an escape route--now comes a sub. Now that Ben passed on his opportunity to join MiL, I believe Widmore might get the opportunity next (towards season finale).

Ugh, I still don't know whose side Widmore is on. Is he the person Jacob was referring to that needs to find the island? He could be on Jacob's side in that case (although still not necessarily). But in season 4, it was stated that he wanted everyone on the island to be killed, just like MiL does so that could indicate he is on MiL's side. But that could just be coincidence.
I'm going to say he's with MiL. I think he wanted to have Jacob killed so that he could eventually return and be the island leader once again.

It's just weird to imagine Widmore and Ben on the same side, but considering Ben's growth, they could be....

I missed the episode last night and just finished watching it. Wow... I would have to say my favorite episode of the season so far. The character development for Ben was excellent.
Also, I am now rooting for team Ilana. I don't know if she is now on Jacob's side or not (I'm unsure because of the new info Ilana has about Jacob {as relayed from Ben's apology/explanation}), maybe this is a new faction. I'm banking on Ilana's side being the good guys. What force would ever forgive and show mercy but the good side? She had the chance to kill Ben and she didn't have to listen to him, but instead she showed complete grace and forgave him.

Ilana said Jacob was like a father to her, so I'm sure she sides with him....

Since Ilana is clearly against Widmore, my guess is he is on Team Unlocke

Just wanted to point out that in both timelines it was Locke who dangled the power trip in front of Ben. I understand "Island Locke's" manipulation of Ben. But I wonder what it means about sideways timeline Locke.

Hydra Island, eh? Leaving from there? On a certain mostly intact airplane, landed by the best pilot ever? Or a sub? Left there by Locke, who faked the explosion?

I believe that Widmore is on MIB's team. I believe that he has come back to the island to take over as the leader. Looking at his past, he ordered Ben to kill Danielle and Alex and was pretty upset when Ben brought Alex back with him. He argued that it was the Island's demand, not his. Ben challenged him on that and Widmore was not able to kill the baby himself, probably b/c it was his own demand and not the Island's. (Rousseau was a name of one of the candidates, perhaps Widmore wanted Ben to get rid of them to eliminate competition.) He was later exiled, one of the reasons being that he broke rules by having an off island relationship. He again broke rules (per Ben) by indirectly killing Alex via Keemy, whom he sent to the Island. I believe that he has sided with MIB with the hope of taking over the power of being the leader on the Island, perhaps promised by MIB.

So, the island sunk after Ben was on the island and then apparently left. Without Sayid to kill Ben he didn't take the bad path and they left the island somehow. Well, if you assume the timelines "forked off" at The Incident, than Ben would have left AFTER sayid "killed" him and probably during the evacuation around The Incident. If so, he's still got whatever "special powers" (if any) he got from being healed by The Others. With him and Miles being the only (main character) children we know that left the island, I can certainly see Ben playing a big part in resolving whatever problem they have to fix in the Sideways (like merging the timelines/etc). That's assuming most of our other Sideways Losties are now "normal" since Jacob might not have touched them yet. Hydra Island, eh? Leaving from there? On a certain mostly intact airplane, landed by the best pilot ever? Or a sub? Left there by Locke, who faked the explosion? The sub was not on Hydra island, but outside New Otherton. Either way, he could be lying going for the sub remnants too, i guess.

How do you fake a sub exploding? And why would Locke do that when he honestly didn't want anyone getting off the Island?

Listening to Jay and Jack at the moment. But just finished while typing... Lost is awesome. I like that New Zealand's own Alan Dale is who Jacob told Hurlseys was coming to the Island. Of course, you don't need a lighthouse with a submarine.

Since Ilana is clearly against Widmore, my guess is he is on Team Unlocke Why is Ilana clearly against Widmore? In season 5, Bram was trying to recruit Miles away from Widmore. Miles declined because they weren't willing to double what Widmore was going to pay. Ilana is definitely with Bram or should I say was.
