I just filled up my 6gig iPod mini, and then I had to deleted all the songs ive listened to less than twice a month, I filled it up again, and after deleting every whole-album and leaving only selected songs that ive d/led, i have about 200megs left which wont last. so I need a new Mp3 player, and I need to know whether to get a Video iPod, wait for a new apple iPod (i dunno exactly what or when apple will release a new ipod, but I just read on google news that they're planing to counter zune with a new possibly wifi capable ipod) or buy one of the 2 new Windows mp3 players set to debut next month and be released late October Wikipedia entry on the new Microsoft Zune: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_ZuneGo to Google news, type in "New Ipod" for a series of articles on the new iPod

That is a tough question, because - who knows REALLY when the new players will be released. I personally don't like getting the latest and greatest until I have got some competent reviews from people about it. But that is just me! The Zune sounds very interesting- I like that you can connect to the internet with it, but there is a lot of speculation and not a lot of facts on that Wiki page. I have the Ipod Video and I love it. I went to the Ipod store and asked them when the new Ipod was coming out and he was all High and mighty with his - I am smarter than you attitude, and trying to give me the run around. He didn't want to answer the question, he just wanted me to BUY ONE NOW!! Sorry, I digress.... Here are my questions for you: 1) how long can you wait to get a new one, and 2) how much music have you purchased that would NOT be able to transfer to the Zune (from I-tunes store)

1) Zune is supposed to come out in October, and thats pretty much when I'll be getting it unless I decide on a video iPod, or if the new IPod has some crazy wicked feature that I have to have 2) I'm too poor for I-Tunes store, I either buy the CD if it's a band I like, or just get on limewire

That is good that you did not spend any $$ at ITunes with their DRM crapola , and better for the bands too- because they get more profit if we buy the CD vs download from itunes (or the like) Cool- so... I pick, wait for Zune to come out and compare with the Video Ipod, and maybe by then the new ipod will be out, or at least we will know a release date!

I don't think the new iPod is coming out for at least another 9-10 months, unless it's really something special. But I got a 60gb iPod about 2 months ago, and I love it. enough room for all 4000 of my songs, plus seasons 1 and 2 of Lost, with room to spare.

I've heard MS will try to push a subscription-based music service with the new player. I dunno, but personally, the idea of renting music stinks to me.
MacCast has said one rumor is new full-size iPods might not be out until early next year. Also heard maybe a new larger-capacity Nano with Mini-style color cases to tide everyone over in the fall. My guess is, whatever new iPod idea Apple comes up with will be much cooler than the Zune, and there'll be a slew of developers with new accessories already there. But that's just a Mac fan talking.
Apple's DRM isn't hard to get around. Burn the music as an audio CD, then reimport it and convert it to whatever you like. Yay!

I got a 60gb and it rules, I will probably never run out of room on it. I say just get a video iPod.

Man, they should just swap the hard drives in the video pods with flash memory. You could porbably make a laptop with flash memory in a hard drives place...

No problem. Apple has admitted as much, that you can get around its own iTunes DRM that way. France and other Euro countries are going after the iTMS, saying it's not fair because you can't use the music on a player besides the iPod. They argued that you can, you just have to mess around a little.

You could porbably make a laptop with flash memory in a hard drives place... yeah. hard drives take up so much more space. they seriously should have just used flash memory in ipods. i say get the 30gig ipod. if you would really need the 60gb, then get it, but i doubt you have enough songs to make it worth the price. i got the 30gig and it has enough space left to last me over 4 more years. and if youve been surviving with 6gigs in the past, you can definately survive with a 30. thats my recommendation. just dont get the 60gig.

What is flash memory? Technology hurts my brain. I agree, 30G is a lot. I still have around 15G of space left even after many vids, a Second season of Lost and 900 songs.

I'm not up on all the tech details, but from what I DO know, essentially flash memory is stored on a chip. Nanos and Shuffles use Flash. No moving parts. Video iPods use hard drives, which are spinning magnetic disks, like in a computer but much smaller. Flash isn't used for large-cap devices because from what I gather Flash is more expensive to produce, so that would drive the cost up, and Flash memory has a limited number of erase/write cycles before it dies (it's way up there, but a hard drive still lasts a lot longer). I have a 30gb ipod and I'm up to 16gb left. It's an enormous amount of space. Filling it up takes some work. By that point you'll probably want to back stuff up regularly and swap out your videos and music for what you really need/want at the time, anyway. Ever try to scroll through 30, 40 gigs worth of music just to find that one song stuck in your head? Kills your thumbs.
