What is flash memory? Technology hurts my brain. I agree, 30G is a lot. I still have around 15G of space left even after many vids, a Second season of Lost and 900 songs. I'm not up on all the tech details, but from what I DO know, essentially flash memory is stored on a chip. Nanos and Shuffles use Flash. No moving parts. Video iPods use hard drives, which are spinning magnetic disks, like in a computer but much smaller. Flash isn't used for large-cap devices because from what I gather Flash is more expensive to produce, so that would drive the cost up, and Flash memory has a limited number of erase/write cycles before it dies (it's way up there, but a hard drive still lasts a lot longer). wow! great description. exalt for that +5

Why are you even debating this decision? With a Video iPod you can but Lost.

I'm hoping the next gens of ipods will feature other movie formats too (xvid, mpeg). would be cool stuff. right now i didnt go for the ipod video 30 gb, because it wasnt mobile enough for my taste. I like to run and go biking with my mp3 player and that would just be too large for comfort. I might for for an ipod nano video if that'd exist (don't kick me in the face if it does actually exist. not that savy on the ipod bizniz)

I have a 6Gig Ipod Mini too. I understand the frustration. I'm casually looking around for a new one also. One thing you may want to consider when shopping, that I didn't realize until recently (maybe you already have). You need to have the same amount of free space on your computer as is on you iPod. For example, there is no point in me getting a 60GB iPod because that's the same size as my laptop. You can't fill it all up, if you need to have the same backed up on your computer. Just thought I'd mention it. I'm looking at getting a 30GB iPod Video, but I'm comfortable with that I have, for now, so I'm going to wait until the new iPod comes out. Mostly because my sister got an iPod Video for her birthday, so I want a better one! :-)

BTW, it looks as though it may come out sooner than you think, the new iPod that is. Rumor is that it won't have a click wheel, and the screen will be the full face of the iPod at a HUGE 3.5" (diagonally)!!!!! It will be a touch screen, so the click wheel will appear with the touch of your finger. The big announcment for SOMETHING is on September 12th at 10:00AM PST. Here is one of the articles about it: playlistmag.com/weblogs/ipodblog/index.php#52747

zune's specs have been relesed, so we can now compare. looks like the J&J fans advice was right as usual, video ipod looks way better. zune has very few advantages over the ipod, is more expensive, and the first wave from the factory will probably be filled with mechanical problems (remember the original ipod batteries)

yeah, but they sure solved that. the new nanos have 24 hours of battery life! thats freakin amazing.
another great reason about the new ipods is that from the 60gig video to the current 80gig video, the gigs went up 20, and the price went down $50. thats is in my mind unbelievable because of how much of a rip-off ipods used to be. those are two AWESOME reasons already to buy the new ipods.

the batteries never had a problem with the time they hold, the problem was that they'd die for good after about a year and your ipod was useless cuz they couldn't be replaced. caused a big mess. i dont think they ever issued a recall so that was a few hundred down the drain. and what do you mean "used to be"?

and what do you mean "used to be"? alright, maybe ipods are still rip-offs but what i was getting at was that apple just lowered their prices immensely, so it had a big impact on me

do people actually have 80gb of music? i think its a total waste. i would just get an 8gb nano, fill it up with what i felt like listening to at the time and if i felt like listening to different music, you can erase everything and put the new music in. ur not gonna listen to 20,000 different songs at once, are you? unless you watch a ton of videos, which i dont
