My top five:
1. The Beatles....I think of the Beatles as more a lifestyle than a band, I guess. 2. Led Zeppelin.....Very, very, VERY close number two. 3. Cream 4. Elton John (pre-1974) 5. Sleater-Kinney

I was lucky, my parents have good taste when it comes to music, and I'd listen to alot of oldies when I was younger.

I was searching the threads and stumbled across this one and decided to give it a bump. This thread started over 10,000 posts ago!!
My top 5 all time (in no order):
1 Led Zeppelin 2 Beetles 3 Oasis 4 Metallica 5 DMB 6 U2 7 Pearl Jan
My top 5 active (current) artists (once again, in no order):
1 The Strokes (in concert March 11th!!) 2 The White Stripes 3 Franz Ferdinand 4 Coldplay 5 BRMC (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) 6 Oasis (still going strong - prolly favorite all time) 7 Wilco 8 The Black Keys 9 The Killers 10 The Kings of Leon 11 Queens of the Stone Age 12 Radiohead 13 Audioslave/Rage Against the Machine 14 Travis
I don't like:
Anything that is played on the radio because it is all played waaaay too much, but I especially hate that stupid "my hump" song. Da*$ it!! now I have it in my head!! Get out! Get out! Ahhhh, much better.
So I gave more than 5 songs. Big whoop

All-time Top 5: 1. Led Zeppelin(Stairway to Heaven is overrated imo and hardly their best work) Actually I think people tend to say its overrated because it has been played so much. It is the most played song in the history of FM radio I believe. If you look at the song without all the hype it has gotten over the years. It was quite a revolutionary song. 1) The song started off quiet and with a slow tempo and then ended loud with a faster tempo. Thus giving birth to power ballad as we know it today. Nobody orchestrated songs like that until Jimmy did, after that almost every rock band has a "Stairway Type" song. 2) Zeppelin didn't release singles because they thought the songs should be heard in the context of the album. Stairway was 8min long, and it is the biggest song in rock radio history. Would a 8+min song that wasn't a single pull that off in todays world. 3) This song showed Jimmy's "Guitar Army" technique for the first time. He layered multiple guitars with different timbres and made an orchestra from the guitar. Nobody did that before, and from the studio experience I have that is the rule in recording guitars in rock music today. So yea "Stairway" isn't my personal fav Zep song, but as Zeppelins most significant contribution to music It would probably be that. Over the years we have heard so many bands make songs that are "Stairway Esq" that I think it waters down the accomplishment that Stairway had when it first came out.

OK Jay. You make a very convincing argument. The over-hyping is what I can't stand, plus it just isn't my fav song of theirs. Thanks for the education! LOL
