What did everyone think of the four toed statue? I hope they explain more about it soon.

my money is on it being of Enkidu - he's been mentioned before (in a crossword puzzle someone was working on in the Swan Station) and I was looking it up on Wikipedia and they mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh that after Enkidu was "civilized" he was a protector of flocks from wolves. If I wanted to protect an island I'd put up a statue of that guy

There's a whole discussion about this on pages 7 and 8 of the LaFleur thread

Maybe the "earthquake" that was experienced in New Otherton with the arrival of Flight 815 caused all but the foot we saw to fall into the Temple area.
The statue also appears to be leaning on an ankh (in it's right hand) - the same symbol Paul had around his neck.
Just a thought

I wonder if the rest is just underwater now. Maybe when it crumbled, it fell into the ocean.

I agree with Jay's thoughts, that the statue is of Richard Alpert.

I agree with Jay's thoughts, that the statue is of Richard Alpert. A 20+ foot tall statue of Richard Alpert...That would be something worth worshiping. He is hooooot.

HA HA HA TOTALLY AGREE ha ha he IS a cutie and does awesome accents. ...but more on the statue...yeah looks like Anubis(god of death) to me. I am going with that one. Did anyone in here used to watch "Gargoyles"? there was an episode called "grief" that was about him...and could be an interesting theory on why some people might want the island. I watched the episode again and got to thinking, it's almost like the island itself is this god, Anubis. Found the episode on You Tube if anyone is interested in some Anubis stuff. www.youtube.com/watch?v=SP9tNry8KBM&eurlwww.youtube.com/watch?v=gpRpodxVhDk&feature=relatedwww.youtube.com/watch?v=dhsymQgun6A&feature=related

When I was in high school, I took an art history class my senior year. One of the first things we studied were the Ancient Egyptians. In many depictions (especially statues), their rulers/kings/pharaohs/gods are always shown in a "walking" position, with their left foot forward. My teacher emphasized over and over again that this was because of the Egyptians' belief in the afterlife - having the left foot forward meant they were walking into the afterlife. Also, their gaze straight ahead signified the afterlife. (I swear I just pulled out my old notebooks! ;D) I have some examples here: Anubis: Menkaure and His Wife, Queen Khamerenebty: I have tons of more interesting information, but it's really not related to my point, which is this: the statue shown on LOST has its RIGHT foot forward (or at least seems to, from the angle)...does this mean that the Losties are headed for what is the opposite of "afterlife"? Is everything on the Island a mirror of "real life"? Or perhaps it's an oversight? I'd love to hear all your thoughts!

But Sawyer would have walked around the entire season without his shirt.

I dunno Footsteps on the Run. there are darn few oversights on this one. I'm doubting the left foot forward into the afterlife is an oversight. I think there's more to where they are and how it plays into death than your left foot forward theory envelopes.
