OK - we're going old school guitar here - you plug the cable from the guitar into the effects box - and a cable from the box to the amp - you can also "daisy chain" multiple effects boxes together - say a "Cry Baby" and an Equalizer, or an echo - much the same way. Oh and they tend not to come with cables - but you don't need to spend a ton of money on them.

Well - over the years - mainly as a bass player - you pick up on stuff like that - ansd mess with a lot of effects boxes - even for basses - well not really meant for basses - but my approach to music is pretty much lik my approach to anything else - experiment - and maybe you come up with something new.
But as far as effects boxes - and effects racks go - the principal is pretty simple - the signal from the guitar - ends up at the amp no matter how much is in between. There's always an in-put and an out-put.

Igmar, your one of my guitar heros now!
And Scott, I would suggest you look into a Whammy pedal, my favorite guitarist Jack White uses one, and his band doesn't even have a bass player!
