My question is

Why did Claire, Jacob's Mother, and DHARMA Amy survive their pregnancies? How come the Others were losing their mothers?

Can anyone logically explain why those 3 survived for me?

Claire was far enough along.

The other two happened before the Incident...the most likely cause for the pregnancy issues.

Claudia would also have been far enough along as well.

Don't forget Rousseau, who gave birth after the Incident, but like Claire and Claudia, conceived off the island. I'm pretty sure they implied that Aaron was OK because he was conceived off the island, when they had Juliet giving Sun her ultrasound. Presumably, Sun and Ji Yeon would not have been OK, since she was conceived ON island. If you go by Jack's theory that Smokie was somehow killing the Others' moms and babies to prevent new candidates (or just prevent more people on the island), then perhaps Amy's was OK since she was inside the sonic fence... but that wouldn't explain the Others' fertility problems after THEY started living inside the sonic fence. If you subscribe to Jay's theory that the fertility problems arose after the Black Rock smashed the Tawaret statue, then it's theorietically possible that Amy's baby was conceived off-island... which is never implied, but I suppose she might've taken a vacation via sub, got knocked up, and returned to the island. I always hoped they'd link the fertility issues to the Incident like spinaltumor says. There's also the possiblity that the problem was simply the presence of the electromagnetic energy causing some problem at conception. This is kind of the biggest hole in the show for me--not some small mystery just meant to make us wonder, but a real plot element that the story seemed structured to answer and then just... wasn't. Perhaps in the DVD "epilogue" Hurley will ask Ben, "So like, what was up with women dying in labor if their baby was conceived here?"
