It's funny, my first visceral reactions to the end of the series were mixed. On a emotional level the entire finale was just one big goodbye after another to all of the characters we grew so close with the last 6 years. The other reaction was I guess a bit of disappointment. The show has also conditioned us to constantly chase meaning and find some type of foothold of understanding the narrative arch that has been present....I'm sure you know the feeling.
But what about the...? And the...? I never quite understood the...? You never explained the....
The thing that brought me to LOST was genre art. I have always loved good well thought out fantasy and sci-fi. Like Borges work those puzzles kept me guessing, etc.
I think the thing that finally turned me over or around is that hey. Those are things that kept me interested but they weren't really the things that kept me coming back. Lost more than anything was a show about people in an extraordinary situation and the relationships that were build, shattered, and renewed. Lost was about community....I can tell you the worst human trait. That's easy. It's cruelty. Yet the best? That's hard. Love, Humor...empathy. Those are all strong candidates. It's really the way we form complex, strong relationships and keep them going through thick and thin. We don't bail on one another when we really are friends.
So yeah. Polar bears, 108 minutes, Dharma Sharks, Jesus Sticks, The Island's true history...well we can only wonder. But that's not really what the show is about and to tell you the truth. The more is revealed from a mystery...the less interesting it is and obviously the less mysterious. it is...and mystery is a wonderful thing.
What was important were those characters. Even the ones that didn't make it to the last scene. Someone like Eko. What a character and what a transformation.
It was those connections. Some of my favorite scenes in Lost were people connecting. Driving the VW van down the hill listening to Three Dog Night's SHambala. That episode was a thing of beauty, because for that one moment they weren't thinking about getting off the island or the others. They were just bonding and enjoying themselves.
I'm glad we didn't get Sawyer with some bad wig and gray beard as an old man. I'm glad we didn't see some fake made up Kate walking with a cane.
We left the characters as we knew them WHEN we knew them.
I understand if people were disappointed. But if you just step away and watch the finale a few more times perhaps you'll stop worrying about what you didn't get and enjoy and savor what you did.
PEACE....
