I am a huge fan of LOST!!! I can't wait to see what you all thought But while I am the type of person to spend way to much time on LOST forums, and watch every episode 3 times, I'm sure there are some very confused casual watchers of the series. so I offer this explanation of last night. I tried to keep this unbiased, just facts so as to understand the finale better, you can form your opinions as you will
ok in a nutshell: Everything in season 1-5 was pretty much face value. You see them crash on an island, you see the character flaws and you see them grow as people. The flash backs were always just that: Flash backs. you got to see glimpses of how these people were before crashing on the island. The same goes for the flash forwards in season 4 and the 2 different timelines in season 5: Simply a way of letting the audience know what the characters are about, what drives them, etc...
OK so season 5 finale Jack and Juliet blow up the Swan Hatch, hopping that it will create an opposite universe were the island (or at least the swan hatch) never existed to bring down the plane. Thus leaving the Survivors to live out their lives as if nothing has happened. When season 6 opened with the alternate flight and landing of Oceanic 815 we are led (and expected) to believe that the bomb worked and we now have 2 universes: 1 where the survivors never crashed and one were Juliet has recently sacrificed herself.
Here is where we get our first clue that the second world/universe is in fact purgatory or limbo or some sort of after life. Juliet is slipping in and out and simply tells Sawyer "it worked". Near-death experience = a glimpse of heaven (or in this case purgatory) Juliet then dies, very sad... we cry.
Next clue: Desmond is shoved in a box with Electro magnetic things pointed at him. Widmore is simply doing this to make sure that he can enter the "light cave" (or whenever you want to call it) because as we have been told many times: The island is very electro magnetically active. Desmond is special (as we have seen from the Swan hatch implosion) in that he is immune to Electro magnetism, in that it isn't deadly to him. anyway, after this NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE Desmond comes out of the box having glimpse what the audience believes is an alternate universe but we now know is purgatory.
on a side note desomnd acts very odd for the rest of the season, I assume this is because he, unlike Juliet, realized that it was purgatory. but that is just a theory. this is also what desomd meant by his little speech to Jack before entering the "Light Cave"
ok another side note: We were told very early on that the swan hatch had an "incident" in it's past. This is when jack and company blew it up, thus releasing extreme amounts of electro magnetism, and destabilizing the area. Thus: the button is needed. The explosion DID NOT create an alternate timeline with out the crash as we are led to believe for most of season 6.
ok back on track: so over the corse of the show we have had multiple people die. (and "multiple" i mean like every character I ever cared about!!!!) upon death they enter this purgatory. and then upon the end of all of our survivors lives they are finally able to reunite with loved ones and enter into heaven or the after life or whatever.
One last side note: Purgatory was our character's idealized version of what should have happened to them if they had never been in the crash. They can only cross over into afterlife when they realize that crashing on the island was the most important event of their lives. it caused them to create relationships (both romantic and friendly) with people who they never would have met. It caused a group of misfits and outlaws to find purpose. and it above all caused them to grow into amaze people who would ultimately sacrifice themselves for the sake of the world (protecting the island).
There were obviously other mysteries and magic that is still unexplained, but this show has always been about characters and it ended with these amazing characters getting a chance at a happy ending, without having to sacrifice the amazing things that they had given their lives for.
ok now for the Smoke Monster:
I have 2 theories:
For both theories we have these facts: Upon death "Man in Black" "Not-Locke" (what the heck!! Why do we never find out his name???) whatever you want to call him was tossed into the stream that led into the "Light cave". Rumble Rumble Rumble and the black smoke monster comes shooting out of the cave. We then follow jacob as he finds his brother's body (AKA Man in black or Not-Locke) He then lays him to rest in the cave with his mother. "Man in Black" (Jacob's brother) While wanting to leave the island doesn't seem that violent or intense. (he does murder his own mother, but this is one murder over an entire lifetime, kate murdered like 5 people, and we don't consider her evil) but then, in smoke monster form, he turns incredibly violent and murders like 8 hundred people over the corse of the series. Including slamming Mr. Echo into a tree like a jerk!!
ok now we enter the land of speculation
Theory one: The Smoke Monster has always been there, it simply takes the shape of people that have died, for the most part, on the island (the only person i can think of that didn't either die on the island or whose body is now on the island is Richard's wife but whatever.) anyway, so Jacob takes his brother's body and buries it with his mother, pointing to the fact that the smoke monster is not our no-named brother of jacob, but in fact a separate entity. Black smoke monster in simple terms is a magical being that can take the form of anyone who is dead on the island (body or soul) He then uses the powers of tree slamming and shape shifting to scare people into helping him leave the island. Which he wants to do in order to wreak havoc and destroy the world.. this all seems very cliche and dark, but I like this theory much better.
Theory 2 is the more obvious, but since this is LOST we are talking about I"m more inclined to believe the first. Ok this is more face value. Not-locke floats down the light tunnel, his soul emerges as the black smoke monster (because of the magic of the "light") he then becomes a purer form of himself. what I mean by that is all of his emotions become extremely intensified. causing him to want nothing more than to leave the island, killing whoever stands in his way. Jacob finds his body (in the same place we later see Jack just before he dies) which in this theory doesn't mean anything, since the black smoke is his spirit or soul. He then proceeds to Bloody up pilots scare the crap out of Jack on multiple occasions, try to pull locke into a hole and knock trees over because he's pissed that his brother won't let him leave the island... can you tell i dont like this theory??? haha
That's what i think of the smoke monster... this type of stuff is much less concrete, i think, because like I said before, the story has always been about the characters:)
Both theories require you to assume a little bit, but it wouldn't be lost if we weren't kept guessing
that was way more than a nut shell... haha sorry for the length... hope that helped
