A plane crashed in the Pacific. Everyone died including Vincent the dog.
Just before death, Jack's life, experiences and dreams flashed before him in a few nanoseconds.
These nanoseconds lasted for six years and drove us all crazy.

It did not happen with the nanoseconds thing. Everything on the Island happened, as Christian said, "Everything you've been through is real."
Everything that happened on the Island, from the plane crashing to Jack's death all happened.
When everyone died, before Jack and after Jack they gathered at this "sideways" to find each other, to remember so they could all "move on" together into let's just say "heaven", but I wouldn't say heaven because it's too y'know.
The Island was not hell, it was real, it all happened.
