Desmond introduced himself on the plane to Jack though, didn't he? You would think Jack would've commented on that. He only introduced himself as Desmond. There would be a million people with the same name as your son, and you wouldn't think twice about it if you met another one way older than your current son.

Final theory on The Sideways: Is NOT caused by Jughead. The Sideways is irrelevant (including how The Island sunk), other than the fact that OUR LOSTIES are there. The Sideways is just another reality, but not relevant to us, just like when Dez went back to another reality after The Swan (and met a different Charlie/Penny/etc). Whatever they do to stop MIB (activate some failsafe/electromagnetics) or whatever MIB does as his final move (maybe at The Source) will send them to the Sideways, just like Dez got sent around when The Swan imploded. Dez has figured this out in The Sideways and figured out that they need to make their connections with each other and their Constants to get them back. They will do this at The Concert, and all will go back to Lost Island (after sacrificing their "happy sideways ending") to live Happily Ever After. Obviously someone (Jack) will have to convince them that's not where they're "supposed" to be.
We should have never left. We need to go back.

In the beginning, there was the island. It stood for all that is good and evil, faith and curiousity, life and death, man vs man/world/self, free will and destiny. Protectors have been selected since then to guard the Source and the world because, "since the dawn of time, man has been curious, imagining all that is possible."
Mother being the first we see, knows that her succesor will be born from Claudia. What she doesn't expect is that a second will be born. Knowing this after, she realizes there will be temptation to curiosity because in essence, these two children are of man. She attempts to shelter them from being man but knows she cannot. She sees how easily Brother is tempted to lie about the game he finds, yet sees how Jacob does anything for her. She knows Jacob will succeed her but wishes it were later. She shows them the cave and this also shows how curious and tempted Brother is about the Light. The island also begins to tempt him, showing him his dead mother in a bright light. This being the boiling point, the line in the sand has been drawn. Jacob to protect, Brother to exploit for a means to an end. Mother knowing she will be killed transfers responsibilty to Jacob. Jacob out of rage throws his brother who he cannot kill into the Source, releasing the physical representation of what is bad in Brother, and man in general. As their "game" begins to take structure, even Jacob knows he cannot control it forever.
Knowing one day a loophole will be found, Jacob enlists the services of Richard to help him. Here we see that the loop is getting one of those Jacob brought to kill him. He makes him the moral compass for those that have been brought to the island. More time passes and we learn that a group wants to research the islands abilities: The Hanso Foundation, a group "reaching out to a better tomorrow." Whether they found the island themselves or were brought by Jacob, there is a truce established that allows them to research the island. They begin testing different properties on the island.
At the same time, Jacob has begun interacting with our survivors to come to the island, with Sawyer being the first one chronologically. What I find important here is that Sawyer is the only one touched before the Incident. He had a chance to go off island and change it but chose not to.
Here is where it gets tricky. Our survivors are now in the past, living out there lives in Dharmaville, being told that the past cannot be changed. All events that are happening (the impending detonation, incident, Ben shot) are the linear cause of what brings us to what we have seen since season 1.
Detonation/Incident
Our Original Timeline since the Incident: Survivors get sent back to their original time. (Alpert tells us and Sun that he witnessed them die in the past because he was helping them in there mission, so what they did in past had to have shaped what happens in this timeline) Eloise from this point on sees that she will one day kill her son, gears him towards mathematics so that he will one day go back, repressing his love for music. The Dharma Initiative continues their research by containing the leak caused by the explosion, creating videos in order to inform of what occurred and what they must prevent. Resetting it every 108 minutes is the only way. A failsafe is created however because you can't contain something forever, you must let it run it's course. Benjamin is still raised on island becoming more synical every day. He is asked to be patient and one day leads the efforts of the Purge. This one part I stand on solely from what he told John and what he pulled out of the vent with Jack as well as his speech of being a martyr or prophet: he does have a book that shows and explains everything that is the island, possibly Jacobs tapestry on paper. He knows their fate for as he says, Fate is a fickle b/itch. He is the first to see the plane, knows of his surgery, knows when in Tunisia he lands.
After the Incident, leadership was appointed to Charles because Eloise was now a mother. This is first we see that Jacob wants the mothers to just raise a child. Could also be where the fertility problems occur. Life will not occur because the light has been effected. As with Jacob, possibly once the light goes out of the fire, the same with the island: once it goes out it'll be gone forever. Widmore and Ben argue, leadership goes to Ben. Similar rules applied to them? Ben says he can't kill him but does so on island so confused there.
815 crashes, our story unfolds from there until Desmond activates the failsafe, being the reason we get out of the 108 reset. The story gets out of it's loop. If it is similar to the Source and Light, Desmond, doing it out of love and wanting to change things, becomes granted abilities like that, instead of what Brother wanted, which changed him into smoke. The island becomes visible. Leads us to our next pocket of energy, the wheel. Ben greedily pushed it instead and causes the island to disappear (could it have been submerged at this point?). Locke becomes leader and plays into Smokeys plan. He pushes it again without the help of Christian (who I still hold on to and hope is Jacob since he couldn't help John up, can't touch him again). While Ben only jumped about 10 months into the future, Locke goes the full 3 years. They all come back, Smokey finds his loophole but by that time Jacob had already set up his pawns to fight back. Our story is then of finding the new Jacob. Jack too easily gets it but we still see Sawyer quiet upset. But we are still told that even Kate could have accepted.
In the end, they will all sacrifice themselves for the island in one fashion or another. Desmond knows of this other universe but has made no voice to our timeline about it. The quote "you have to lift it up" from way back in season 2 will be what Jack understands and will know what Desmond meant. As Jack told Locke at the beginning of this season,"nothing is irreversible." And as Jacob said he never had a choice, maybe one of them has what it takes to take they're finger out of the dam (cork and bottle) and blow it up instead. Whether Smokey, this timeline, and our survivors go down, we have been told somewhat from the beginning, they are/have/will have LOST. The only way they can both let the island sink like Smokey wants and still survive, is for Desmond to act as the failsafe. He must get everyone in one or both timelines to, in lack of a better term, find a Constant that is both here and there, and to get them to remember about it. It will be their redemption and their world without the Island, Jacob, and Smokey.
LAX Timeline: After the Incident in this timeline, mass exodus of the island occurred. Hints at this occur when we're told that Roger took Ben off the island. Things begin to change. Miles is raised by his father. Eloise knowing that she can't go back to the island, allows Daniel to live his life as a musician. A fundamental knowledge of the events must still be present on their parts though. We see Eloise pin (has to hint at parellel timelines) and her willingness to want Desmond to let things go, that he wasn't ready.
Unless this is a world without Jacob at all, Sawyer still remains the only one touched because he was touched before the Incident. He becomes a different person all together but also has his parents die at a different age. Which could still make him a big part of candidacy. Oddly it seems that Kate and to some extent Sayid are the only ones with the same lives. Kate is still on the but says sincerely that she didn't do anything. Maybe this is something she sacrificed, just so that everyone else could have a better life in this world.
All those that have died in the original have been trying to get those that didn't to remember what happened.
Desmond wants everyone to meet at the concert, where he will attempt to get everyone to remember. Claire will go into labor. David's mother will either be Juliet (more likely) or Penny (random just because of her tour de stad). Sawyer and Juliet may hit it off, and they should. Eloise, Daniel, Chang, and Miles will be there. Those parents have to remember the incident and these people. Maybe aids in getting them to remember. What I hope for is that, even though it became noncanon, they have lead a new effort to bring back Dharma in the form of Octagon Global Recruiting. In terms of John, I think just accepting the surgery is enough. He has trust and faith in Jack just as Jack eventually did in the other timeline.
It will be their happily ever after and the islands timeline will be nullified. It won't be a cop out. Nothing is Irreversible because you can't tell them what they can't do.

The sideways is a continuation of the island story - in that it - and how they got back to 2004 - actually happens after Jack and maybe Desmond do something - might even be those 2 and Smokey who do it - but their arrival back in 2004 will happen tonight - just turning the donkey wheel did to Ben - he was ejected to Tunisia and to some time in the future from where he was - but in this case - they are ejected back into their own pasts - probably to a point in their lives before Jacob got there - all this with their memories of the island buried.
What remains to be scene is why Desmond is trying to get them to remember the island. Is it possible that the island has risen again?

I go along with that pretty much, whatever they do on the island will send them back to the original flight which is relatively uneventful and the real-time ending is whatever happens at the concert in the flash-sideways. Hurley and Desmond at least must know about the island, maybe others.

OMG if the show went out on someone's eye closing...OMG I've been saying, for about 2 years now, that the show will end with Jack's death and his eye closing. It would be poetic. But I don't fully believe that anymore. Good call on both of your parts! I thought that last scene was VERY fitting for the show.
