When they went through the entire episode not giving us MIB name it irritated me a little. After a night sleeping on that thought I think I know why.
I think the reason they didn't give us a name for Jacob’s brother is that Jacob’s brother and MIB are not the same. Jacob floating his dead brother (yes I think he was dead at the time) allowed MIB to take the form of Jacob’s brother the same way that MIB took the form of Locke when he came back to the island.
There are definite parallels between the two. Two that I can think of right now are…
-Both were candidates to replace the current protector. -Both still had a physical body left behind.
Jacob’s fake mother was protecting the that spot since MIB was trapped in that cave. I think that the light and the warmth was something that was physically trapping MIB within the cave. After Jacob’s brother came out of there along with smokey I believe that the light and warmth is gone. When Ben and Locke were down in the cave it was freezing cold and dark.

Very true. Had a feeling about that too after he placed the bodies in the cave. Reminded me of how mib took over yemi to get to ecko. Plus it was brothers dead body that freed the smoke so could just be stuck in that body.
What i want to know is what the wheel did to Ben when he came back alive since Locke came back dead and served as smokeys new vessel. Jack and rest wouldn't have been easily manipulated if he still looked like mib.
But yeah brother was different. He was the one always being hit and didn't really retaliate until his mother and yet was truly sorry. Jacob. Killed him then and is just as "bad" as brothers actions.
Have more will put it later.

Yeah I think that's why fake-mom said anyone going into the cave would be worse than death, because they'd be releasing smokey.

And it's worse than death because now all the dead people are stuck there. So they're dead, but not able to pass on.

What about the time when MIB was telling Kate that his body was taken from him?

I understand the theory and like it (despite that, I still think MIB - brother), but I don't see why that would keep us from getting a name for his brother. Since we don't know MIB's name it wouldn't give anything away.

I think the reason why we didn't get a name is the same reason why we didn't get a name for the crazy "mom". They both had names way back in season one, "Adam and Eve"

I think they didn't name him because they don't want us to relate the brother to the monster as we have to Locke.
I honestly think Jacob killed his brother. Which complicates the smokey idea.
When the mom says you'd come out as something worse, she means that you would be giving the smoke a live vessel to leave the island. When the dead body entered, smokey got pissed and shot out cause it thought it would be a live person. It can't exit willingly through something dead. There after he took MIBs shape because it's the only form that it knows/wants to use since it would get to jacob seeing his brother back from the dead.
The fake mom also always knew that trouble would arise with 2 sons. She knew Jacob would never lie to her and that the other would be secretive. I think planting the game there for him to find on the beach was a test to see who would tempted to walk into the light. Jacob also really didn't question. Brother was interested in beyond the sea, where they come from, and death. She knew he wanted answers and was curious about everything.
She also said brother was special. Was it all a lie or does it relate to what Aaron and walt are?
Plus why does she say it's not time for them to learn about the light?
And its weird that the mom protects the island yet gives MIB his mantra of they come, and it always ends the same.
Don't get why she blindfolds them when taking them to light.
How exactly did she make it so they can't kill each other?
What exactly does she mean when she says, this is the reason we're here.
MIB does say it's beautiful so Locke might have found it way back when. I have been saying that you could hear a magical sound when the boar goes into the bush and Locke hears the monster.
Little bit of light in everyone but they always want more. They could try to take it but they could put it out. Light goes out here, goes out everywhere. MIB asks who will protect it.
I like what he told Jacob about making his own game.
Real mother came to MIB in a light similar to cave. Could smokey already be tempting him to go to the cave?
Ship. A way to get from one place to another. Many things across the sea.
Jacob twice beats a defenseless MIB just because he didn't want to accept he was lied to.
Why does she say, whatever you have been told, you will never leave this island?
How did she love them in different ways? Why did she need him to stay good?
Watches to know if she's right. If they're bad. Easy to say they're not when you look from above.
Means to an end.
Everything dies.
What kind of system can channel water and the light?
How does he know that turning him will get him off? He just says that he's special.
Something familiar about her saying, I am so sorry.
She wakes Jacob up and says it's time. So it took 43 years to be the right time.
Life death rebirth. The source heart of the island. Never go down there. You'd be worse than dying much worse.
So wine gives you protector, long life, special powers to touch others?
I see it now, you will to, until then you don't have a choice. So then no free will?
Storm came right at conflict. She tells him to be careful. She has to know she will die much like Jacob knowing Ben would stab him. Cool that she holds up black stone when she's stabbed.
Just some thoughts so far. Need to rewatch first season stuff as well as mibs discussions thus far this season. Trying to get it to fit where I like this episode.
