Firstly, I will put out the Crackpot theory (#1) that the C4 was NOT in the plane, but in unLocke's backpack all along, possibly stashed and leftover from The Flame.. and he was just gathering parts from the plane. and used the C4 as an excuse to get them to the Sub. That plane was never going anywhere. And was Jack so stupid he didn't see the backpack trick coming a mile away? This is wiley on unLocke's part, but a HUGE gamble that Jack would have actually gotten on the Sub unless he had some insight/involvement about Kate's shooting. And even more of a gamble based on who could actually cause the C4 to explode (discussed below).
More importantly, Sawyer did NOT set off the C4 in the sub!
Remember the rules (we're led to believe):
1) Candidates can't kill themselves
2) MIB can't kill the candidates
If we believe this, therefore Jack was right that nothing would have happened if they left the C4 alone.. but he also didn't realize that even Sawyer pulling the wires out would have still resulted in nothing happening. Sawyer couldn't kill himself (and the rest).
What really killed them was Sayid. Sayid picked up the C4 and ran. And Sayid is no longer a Candidate. He was one of the only ones that could have actually set off the C4 and cause it to ACTUALLY explode. So of course it did not kill Jack, Hurley, and Sawyer, but gave them an escape route, and SAYID CAUSED THE DEATH OF THE REST.
What's more interesting about this is that, again, this whole ploy was a huge gamble by unLocke. There were only a few people on the sub that could actually set off the C4, since the Candidates couldn't kill themselves. I'll even say that Sayid was actually under unLocke's orders (or influence) here to set off the C4, since unLocke knew that was the only way to get it to go off. This is the only way unLocke could be sure. Otherwise its a huge gamble.
Regardless its a huge gamble because even if you get the right person to trigger it, what are the odds it actually kills them versus just breaching the hull and letting them escape (like it did). So, Sayid running away was unexpected and the factor that changed everything.
And the real question is what happens if the C4 doesn't go off at all? If they all escape, is unLocke still trapped forever? It would seem so, otherwise why not just let them escape without harm. Again, huge gamble.
Crackpot theory #2: And i'll take this a step further that Jin is not dead (yet again). Because he's a candidate. He might be knocked out or in shock or something. But they did not show us his face, intentionally. Even if he's passed out, he'll magically wash up on shore soon and slowly recover. (although there's not much time left for that, so this might be unlikely.) but i wouldn't be surprised if he comes out of nowhere in the finale to play some pivotal role.
I've been thinking about what would happen if one (or more) of the Candidates get stuck underwater. Depending on the full rules about how they can die, would this keep them alive underwater somehow? Would fate step in and let them loose somehow? Would being stuck underwater alive mean unLocke couldn't escape? If so, that's another huge gamble for unLocke that they get "drowned alive" by the C4 and continue to exist underwater with no way for unLocke to get them out, and therefore no way for him to leave.
