So ive been rewatching LOST from the beginning and was thinking about how some people were unsatisfied by the whispers answer, and that it seemed that the whispers more represented the arrival of the others. at first i was one of those people who thought as such, but in rewatching season 1 i noticed that we were first introduced to the whispers without any indication of others following. Sayid hears them after leaving Rouseau's camp in "Solitary". Then Sawer hears them in "Outlaws" when he is trying to get revenge on the bore that raided his tent. With Sawer's encounter he hears them say "it'll come back around". like a warning from the dead spirits. I think that the whispers have always been helpful and that they only appeared before the Other's arrival to warn the Losties that danger was near. Just ideas that came to mind that made me a bit more satisfied with the answer of the whispers.

Yeah I figured the whispers were warning about Others.
However, in regards to the time we could understand "it'll come back around" I think they were referring to the *real* Sawyer and that James would get revenge on him.

Yeah, I think on the Official Lost podcast, Darlton gave the same explanation that the ghosts were warning the coming of the Others.
Still kinda "meh" about the whispers, though, myself....

I thought it was a fine explanation. Not every answer is going to blow us out of the water.

Yeah, I wasn't overly impressed either with the answer about the whispers...I think I would have been more satisfied if they had been "echos" from the other time lines.....or something like that. "Ghosts" just seems too easy for such a complicated show.

Everyone seems irked because the whispers so often heralded the arrival of the Others. But maybe that was the dead people warning the Losties that the Others were near. Doesn't quite explain wet backwards-whisper Walt appearing to Shannon right before her death. Perhaps we're to infer that part of Walt's power is to astral project to the same plane the dead are trapped on, kind of makes sense.

I'll be more impressed with the whispers = trapped spirits answer if it ties well into the overall mythology of what the island is and who Jacob and MIB are. If my suspicion that MIB either is or is affiliated with some kind of god of the dead turns out to be true, then the whispers explanation will be fitting, IMO.
