Consider the dialogues between MIB and Desmond right before Desmond was pushed down the well, it almost looks like Desmond is expected to be pushed, or to put it in another words, trick MIB to do something. "Why aren't you afraid?" "What's the point of being afraid?" When you are in the know, there's no point to be afraid.
Also, why Desmond wanted to know how deep the well was? Is it possible he was expected to be pushed down and thinking how deep he would fall later on? he seems to know exactly what's going to happen.
Lastly I thought about the kid they saw on their way to the well. He saw MIB and Desmond, then gave a smile before running off. Clearly the kid annoy the hell out of MIB. But the smile, such a sneaky smile. I believed the kid enjoyed the fact that MIB and Desmond were together, knowing MIB was going to do something wrong, something MIB shouldn't be doing. As for what it all means, I didn't think too deep into this. But I am confident to say, adding what we have seen with Hurley and Charlie, to say Desmond tried to kill Locke in the FSW is for revenge is just flat-out wrong. Just putting it out there.
