This isn't that thought provoking but it seems like with MIB not being able to do his thang over water that the best way to contain him is by either the ash the sonar or water....
In the ATL the island is sunk. Therefore MIB would be stuck and would never be able to escape. Therefore there is no need for Jacob to exist, there are no need for candidates after 1977, and the lostie's lives are now free from Jacob's direction. There lives may not be better but it would be theirs.
As it pertains to Hurley, Jacob probably caused the deck to collapse to drive him crazy and to a mental institution where he could hear the numbers to win the lottery, he would then cause all the bad things to happen to Hurley to drive him to Australia at that point.
I'm sure if I think of it you could probably make a logic path for most of the losties on how it would mesh with their lives post 1977 to get them to the ATL present.
Where I see this heading up is that Desmond and Jack will team up to sink the island.... Desmond with his ability to jump through time (and possible ATLs) will come to the realization that the only option they have to not have everyone die is to sink the island. Jack being the candidate that will take over as the new Jacob will listen to Desmond to sink the island (kill all the pockets of electromagnetism). All of the losties (or the ones that didn't die) will escape on the sub, except for Jack. It will be a Bruce Willis in Armageddon type scene where he stays behind to make sure that the island does blow up.
