I just came up with this in a response to another posting, but I think Locke is still a candidate, or at least was until Ben killed him, and that's why his name was not crossed out on the cave wall before MIL did it. He's still a candidate because he didn't commit the cardinal sin of killing his own father (which former candidate Kate did). This is part of Jacob's plan, since it must have been he who instructed Richard to give Locke Sawyer's file so he could get him to kill Anthony Cooper in the black rock. So Smokey assuming Locke's form was under the assumption that he was no longer a candidate, but he was, and this will cause some problems for MIL, like Locke's personality taking him over. Meh, maybe not, I just love theorizing, but it is interesting that Richard, Jacob's intermediary, sent Locke on the path of not killing hid dad...

I like the killing the father thing being why Kate (and Ben?) were crossed off the wall.
I wonder why then Ben was able to kill his father with no interference. And why he seemed to keen on Locke killing his.

Yeah, it's weird. Maybe Jacob wanted to make sure Ben would not replace him, but that Locke might. I guess that's kind of what I was getting at: I think Jacob telling Richard to tell Locke how to get Sawyer to kill Cooper might be him making sure Locke remained a candidate.
