If Smokey is contained on the island that would mean he could not go to Hydra island, Also if we take it literally - one only need jump into the ocean if smokey is chasing them.

He arrived on Hydra Island in Locke's body and rode the boat over to the main Island.
But yeah, not too sure how he does with water contact. It might have been a problem before Jacob died, but now that MIL's "stuck" he might be more solid. At least in human form.

Then is Jacob really containing him on "THE" island.

Wow they address this in last night's episode.
But now we know that Smokey can leave the island so what is Jacob containing on the island. Maybe smokey can leave the island but he loses his abilities. Maybe he did not cross the barrier on Hydra island not because he could not, but because did not want Widmore to know he could.

Since the Hydra disappeared with the main Island at the end of season 4, I think it's safe to assume Smokey just can't leave that "bubble" containing both islands.

Good point but Smokey specifically said he can not travel over the water to Hydra. iI am almost certain that smokey has been seen in the rain - like when Juliet and Kate were running from him.

I think it's just that even as smoke, MIL is confined to certain natural laws. He can't go up super high (like over the pylons), just like a person can't. He can fly over land because people can walk on land. He can't fly over water because people can't walk on water, nor would anyone be able to swim that far without getting exhausted.
That's how I see it, anyway.

You are attempting to use human barriers as barriers for Smokey. But Smokey is far from human, just as a human can not change shapes, turn into smoke, read minds, lives for centuries, flies, etc. it does not seem reasonable that smokey adheres to our restrictions.
This can actually be crucial. Just as Superman is vulnerable to Kryptonite or even a possible Wizard of Oz theory how the wicked witched died when she got wet, there are probably vulnerabilites to Smokey that are not to humans.

It may not seem reasonable to you, but Smokey WAS once apparently human. It's not an impossibility. I'd rather some physical laws apply to him instead of it all just being ~magicalness~
We have seen Smokey in the rain so he can't be defeated by water like some stupid Signs alien.

Since smokey had many non human qualities I think it is rather safe to assume he has non human vulnerabilities. Smoke is definitely not human, even if you believe he once was, he is no longer.

I still say his not being able to go over water isn't because he's "allergic" to it or some such thing. It's not solid, so he can't float over it. He doesn't have unlimited capabilities. Human or not.

A cloud or even smoke can travel over water. One thing we are pretty sure of, that most things said on LOST are said for a purpose. I would think that Smokey saying he needed a boat to get to Hydra is crucial to Smokey's storyline.

But he's not just a cloud.
And it is crucial...he can't float over water. Interesting fact to know.

Well, I thought I heard Jorge say something about MIL being "bound by the ocean" being written in the script for The Package on the last Geronimo Jack's Beard podcast. So we've seen him stand in the surf, and seen him cross it in a boat, but perhaps he can't be surrounded by water, like can't immerse himself. It has to be related to Ben's smokey-summoning clay toilet, that has to drain some underground pool Smokey can't "swim" through otherwise. Clearly he can touch the surf, but can't fly over it, nor can he fly over the sonic fence--I've long felt that though we can't see it, Smokey is somehow bound to the ground, the way he tried to pull Locke into a hole in the ground and so forth. But it's not very consistent--think about how high the deck of the Black Rock is off the ground, or the roosterpit of Flight 815 when he killed the pilot (not to mention where he left his body). I doubt we'll get confirmation on just how high he can fly in smoke form, but they've got to tell us some of the basics, and his limitations re: water will hopefully be included.

The pool of water in the temple is used by Jacob to repair people. We did see Jacob in the water with Ricardo - so Jacob may have an affinity with water. But then again something evil entered Sayid's body while he was in the temple pool.
Perhaps the answer is very simplistic. The old adage where there is smoke there is fire. Water can extinguish fire.
