I was thinking that Smokey assumed the body of Christian as he did with Yemi and Locke. It makes sense as both those bodies are on the island just as Christian's was.

But, Dead Christian has been seen off the island, yet Smokey is contained to the island.

We know that Jacob can appear off the island but we do not know if he can assume the body of a dead person.

Therefore whatever is in Christian is neither Jacob or Smokey and thus a different entity.

I completely agree. I think that the dead are going to have a significant role in things to come, and they are represented somehow by Christian Shepherd, or whoever is appearing as him.
