I'm a bit of a stickler but I had a bit of a hard time with this episode. Ultimately it turned out well, but my wife and I both agreed that the beginning part of this episode, the romantic story that is, were a bit overdone, cheesy, predictable and something straight out of a "dark indian on the cover" romance novel. IT WAS a good story, but it can't be denied that it was a bit over-done.
Now for my specific issues:
1. The priest. He is the worst priest ever. What a butthead. I know the priests of the mid-1800's were different, and that we've had Vatican and Vatican II between then and now, but I do recall that priests exist to forgive. God always forgives provided the subject is remorseful and willing to do penance. Whether or not the subject actually and can do it doesn't matter. This is why there exist jailhouse priests, they often give the Last Rites to the condemned.
Just like the Catholic idea of God cares about the unborn, He also cares about the truly evil. This was in fact one of Jesus' main messages. I don't want to get all preachy, and just a disclaimer - I'm a practicing Buddhist now that has converted from Catholicism (which turned into first Agnosticism and then Atheism). So I probably got something wrong there.
2. In his confession, and in just about anything the priest did as an official priest, would have been done in LATIN. Back before V and V2, they didn't even face the congregation, instead facing the huge crucifix at the head of the church with his back to the parishoners, the Priest would speak strictly in LATIN. I noticed that this priest spoke exclusively en espanol.
3. I was led to believe the ship atop the monstorus rogue wave actually struck the statue. No WAY. I know the water probably did it (the breaking of the statue), but I would expect MOST of the island gone if that happened. Just look at what happened in the 2004 xmas tsunami for an example of one 1/100th the magnitude.
4. Where's the dynamite? How come it didn't get blow. We all know how unstable 1850's dynamite is. Oh yeah. Dynamite was actually INVENTED that year. So I'm assuming they picked up a crate of it in the New World at some point. That stuff is guaranteed to be as lethal as it was 150 years in the future. It really wasn't very safe even back then.
OK enough complaining. The episode redeemed itself with answers provided! It was quite entertaining and all told it was a very good story! I loved it!
