So a flash of insight after Jacob's analogy about the island being a "cork" plugging the evil that is Smokey beneath the island.
Recall the motions that Ben went through to summon Smokey? He crawled into that dank tunnel under his house and literally pulled the plug (or cork) out of the hole allowing the water (or evil) to escape. I thought this rang way to close to the wine and cork analogy that Jacob use when he explained the island to Richard.
My new thought is that Ben (or anyone else) summoning the Monster locally on the island has to reenact the much larger ceremony of fully freeing the Monster from the island. E.g., The island is the "cork" sitting on top of some great hole beneath it (perhaps a gate to hell) and that if someone were to destroy it (by removing all the people from the island?) the island (like the plug Ben pulled beneath his house) would sink to the bottom of the ocean (as was seen in the flash side ways long ago) as the Monster fully escapes his prison.
Anyone else pick up on this? Think it explains the energy that Dharma drilled into... almost as if they drilled too far through the island's plug.

Jay and Jack, Been Listening to your podcast since the beginning and I have to say it’s great! And I for one will be glad when it’s over, considering I’ve been trying to get on your podcast in like forever. but, that’s ok… I’m good for it.
OK, On Mondays show “ab Aeterno” I got to thinking about the smoke monster, Richard and Ben.,
But, this will take a minute., In recent episodes of Lost and mentioned on the last jay and jack pod cast We wondered how Ben., “was able to summon the Smoke Monster when the freighter’s came after them. More so, what’s the relationship between the two and at what point in time did “Ben” come into contact with MIB (Man In Black). Follow me on this, somewhere in the past, ben has had contact with MIB, there was no Dilmar instructs to type a number to summon the smoke monster, like ordering a plane drop of food. My theory is,
YB(young Ben), was shot and taken to the others to save his life.. Yet he wasn’t infected like Sayid. When we return to the older been, he alone with Richard destroys the Delmar community. We assume this was for power and control of the island. But how did this come about, who told him he needed to do this, get rid of the Delmar community.
We know Ben has never met Jacob until that point he stuck the knife in his chest, we come to believe this island master “Jacob” who lives in a cabin surrounded by ASH? But yet, Ben has never seen the face of Jacob , but Yet Richard as seen both of them from his past. We know Richard has never been seen in the Cabin by himself or with Ben. Ben usually goes alone. Its funny how Ben also never mention he saw Jacob to Richard. But, yet Richard allows Ben to be the defecto leader of the island supposedly in the name of Jacob.
We know Ben saw his mother, Richard saw his wife and Locke was told by John Sheppard he must die. At some point in the past MIB had told Ben he could summon him to defend the island. As long as MIB(who we know is the smoke monster) kept the illusion, ben following him instead of Jacob . Everything was going MIB’s way, until the death of Ben’s daughter. Ben was so stricken that he chose the island over his daughter he was susceptible to temptation, NOW MIB that lying, backstabbing , bushwhacker has to do is push Ben’s anger alone towards jacob by appearing as his daughter..
“Ben saw his daughter underneath the temple and was told to follow Locke or else I will kill you.”
And now Miles told Ben, Jacob thought you would make another choice.. At first he choose MIL, but when Lana said she would have him, He then choose Jacob..(at least that what it appears)
That’s my theory! Wacky like Jack’s… Love your show

now the question is how did Ben know that pulling the cork would summon the smoke monster? Was he told or did he stumble upon the puddle pulled the cork and say what happened sort of like trial and error. If he was told does that mean the MIB has been tring to turn Ben away from Jacob for a while.

Ben once told Locke (or was it FLocke? Either way...) that he "used to have dreams." Now, he could have been lying as he tends to do, but if was being honest then I think any dreams he had were visions from MIB, not Jacob (who likes his hands off approach to much to do that sort of thing). MIB could have shown Ben how to summon Smokey via a dream. And Smokey came only to further manipulate Ben into thinking he had any sort of real power on the Island.
Dreams would also be a secure way to give Ben information without Richard being able to know about it to question it.

My view on Ben's knowledge of random things like the plug and the FDW is that Richard told him via Jacob. There can't be much to do on the island (hence the book club) so it would be a good way of passing time for Richard to tell Ben every little detail about the island, how to use them and when to use them and what to do in any situation. Like drills, they teach people how to fire nukes without actually firing any or teach people what to do in a terrorist attack before one happens, Richard taught Ben how to get to the FDW without him actually going there, Ben practised over and over in his mind until he could do it easily.
