So the message that I got from the bottle (feel free to disagree) is that Jacob is the bottle, MIL is the wine and the island is the cork. As long as Jacob and the island exist MIL is trapped. MIL can't get rid of the cork so he smashes the bottle instead.
In the alternate timeline we see the island at the bottom of the sea. Does this mean MIL has dislodged the cork in this timeline? And if the cork is no longer there, has the evil started to spread?

I was wondering that as well. I think that he has, and that things might not end so well in the parallel timeline. I'm starting to wonder if it could become as drastic as saving humanity itself in the parallel.

Alternatively, if MIB and Jacob cease to be, then there is no bottle left and the cork is rendered useless and...sinks.

How literal are people taking this "cork" thing? Like do you imagine some portal to the underworld under the island or just that Jacob was speaking figuratively?

but no, i don't think the island is keeping something "under" it.. i think the island is just keeping MIB on the island, and out of the real world. also, we have already seen evidence of some sort of barrier/protection or something around the island making it difficult to enter, find, or observe. so there may be a second item we're not visually aware of around the island acting as the "bottle".. possibly generated by the island's special characteristics (electromagentism/etc).
i actually don't quite like the "cork" analogy, and rather think the island is more like a "sponge" in an open wine bottle.. because maybe you can get in/out of the bottle via a specific entry point (specific bearing), but instead of a cork holding MIB in, the island acts more like putting a sponge in the bottle, absorbing the liquid in the bottle.
the liquid (MIB) can't really escape the open bottle because of the sponge, and without some other force either "squeezing" the sponge (ie: destroying the island), or something else.

Or the electomagnetism is cause by the evil of hell tring to escape and in the flashsideways the bomb allowed hell to escape (kind of like opening pandora's box) and in island time hell is still trapped. Desmond did say that pushing the button was saving the world.

but i thought pushing the button lets small amounts of electromagnetism (or whatever) out so that the "pressure" doesn't build up and "explode"? and then Desmond turned the key which let a ton out.
Maybe this is true, and related to the "evil" somehow, but in that case the "evil" has been let out in the original timeline as well.
