Daniel Farahday is John Smokey.
How does Faraday take over the likeness of somebody who has been on the Island? I dunno.
However we do know that Desmond can Eloise can become unstuck in time. Why couldn't Farahday know how to do that too?
Before Eloise killed her Daniel he jumped into the mind of a previous life self. Widmore is trying to get back to the Island to save his son. Farahday is stuck in a loop where he constantly dies. By removing Jacob he created a hole in this loop. He cannot prevent his own death but he can merge the alternate time line with the current one and prevent his own death.
