Obviously we just had an amazing episode, and I think it gave us a huge piece to the puzzle!
Jacob gives Richard his 'gift' in return for his work. To never age. This was what Richard wanted most (after the things that Jacob could not grant).
I think that Jacob gave each of the candidates a gift as well, and each gift is different. The gift he gives only takes effect once they land on the island. Interestingly enough, it's very similar to the idea of the devil giving what you most desire. But anyways:
Locke - his legs. Locke wanted most to walk again, and this is what Jacob gave him.
Hurley - the ability to see the dead
Sawyer - the opportunity to avenge his parents
Sayid - the opportunity to become a good person
Jack - the opportunity to show that "he has what it takes" (becoming leader, etc.)
Kwon - Jin's fertility
Kate (maybe) - the opportunity to start over, without being on the run
Note that for "Kwon", it seems more likely now that Jin is the candidate, since he was given fertility.
I find this all very intriguing, because it would seem to indicate that the writers definitely knew where they were going with things. It also seems to relate to the Sideways, which is presumably their lives minus Jacob. So far, each flashsideways has dealt with this intrinsic part of their characters - the thing they most want/want to overcome - and some have succeeded and some (ie. Sayid) have failed.

I think they all were given different gifts, too.
Not too sure about Sawyer's there, though. Revenge isn't so...good? It's more that he had the opportunity to make something of himself without being fueled by vengeance. Which is the life he got with the Dharma Initiative. Trouble is, he lost it.

Yeah I suppose that makes more sense!
