I also think the temple, statues and such are leftover from past ancient groups of people who were called to the Island long ago by Jacob that eventually just all died.

That makes sense, but I'm curious as to why Jacob would have made the Statue his home. Obviously, it's a major structure and is all impressive and stuff, but I get the feeling that it 'belongs' to him more than just a structure built by some Egyptians.
I'm curious to know if Jacob has really been there "since the beginning of time", or if he originated from one of the cultures such as the Egyptians.

Why would MIL not kill everyone who came to the island, much like he did on the black rock? Why wouldnt he have killed all of the losties, right when the plane crashed, except the candidates, if he is unable to touch them? i think its impertinent to find out the "rules" so to speak that they (MIL and Jacob) are adhering to.
One other question from Recon, Widmore told Sawyer that they didnt kill the people from the ajira plane crash, for some reason i want to believe Widmore, he looked pretty sincere, and really had no reason to lie to Sawyer and tell him no... because sawyer didnt believe him anyways and still made the deal with him. I mean the clear answer is that MIL went to the Hydra Island at some point and killed everyone.
Also i think the scene at the end with MIL looking over Richard and Hurley was perhaps one of the best short scenes of the series, you could tell that he was listening in on everything that was being said, like he has super sonic ears or something. I cant wait to watch the last episode and then go back and re watch the whole series and see how much more sense it all makes.

Wow, great episode
When Jacob said that even if he is killed someone else will take my place, who picks the next Jacob? Is one of the canidates already the new Jacob and just doesn't know it?
If Richard was given the gift of eternal life does this mean that he can't be killed by himself or anyone else? It's funny that Richard is just like Lennon to Dogen, the one who takes the blame for anything bad happening, but not the credit for the good.

My feeling is that while I was happy to learn the details of how he happened to be on the island I think that the episode really dragged on with a ton of unnecessary baggage. The scenes in the ship, went on and on - okay he tried to get out of the chains - we got that in about 30 seconds. They have so few hours to wrap up a lot of details and I think this wasted a bunch of time telling this story. I got it that it was Alpert's episode. Does that mean I cannot want to know MIB's name for heaven's sake. Sheesh! Is it just me or did they take a horrendous amount of time to tell us that Richard was from Tenerife, was sold into slavery after killing a doctor, and ended up on a ship that was pulled into the island by Jacob to test his morals? All I wanted to learn was the MIB's darn name! And he still does not seem to have one. It was Richard's episode. Not MIB's. After years of not knowing Richard's backstory, I was pleased the episode spent so much time on it.

I really think the show writers emphasized the chains because they are a strong metaphor for the MIB's "chains" (i.e. he can't leave the island). I was riveted the entire time and thought the pacing of the episode was great. It was by far my favorite episode this season and probably in my top 10 overall.

I thought this was a great episode that answered a lot of questions. I'm really curious as to why Illana was so willing to help Jacob. Did Jacob save her life or promise her something? Why did he pick her to protect the candidates? More questions yet again... ;D
The one thing that concerns me a bit is the sudden disappearance of Desmond. Will we ever learn his complete story? I certainly hope Desmond and/or Penny reappear in these last 7 episodes. I'd also like to see Michael again because they never told us why he can't kill himself. I still have a hunch that Michael is really important somehow and they are purposely leaving him out for a reason. We shall see.

I wonder about the immortality thing. Did Jacob convey it upon Ricardo simply by touching him (a la touching Locke to bring him back, or touching all of the Losties)? Or did Richard maybe get a prolonged dunk in the healing pool at the Temple--the Fountain of Youth. Maybe if you don't need to be healed and/or you're in there for a longer time than the hourglass it extends your natural lifespan. I'm thinking it's simply his touch, and all of the candidates are now ageless but just don't know it yet, since they'd need a long lifespan to be the new Jacob.

I don't think all The Candidates are "ageless" now automatically because of JAcob's touch. This was something specific Richard asked for. I'd be very surprised if Richard asked for the one thing that Jacob's touch just coincidentally happens to do for everyone.

OK, On Mondays show “ab Aeterno” I got to thinking about the smoke monster, Richard and Ben.,
But, this will take a minute., In recent episodes of Lost and mentioned on the last jay and jack pod cast We wondered how Ben., “was able to summon the Smoke Monster when the freighter’s came after them. More so, what’s the relationship between the two and at what point in time did “Ben” come into contact with MIB (Man In Black). Follow me on this, somewhere in the past, ben has had contact with MIB, there was no Dilmar instructs to type a number to summon the smoke monster, like ordering a plane drop of food. My theory is,
YB(young Ben), was shot and taken to the others to save his life.. Yet he wasn’t infected like Sayid. When we return to the older been, he alone with Richard destroys the Delmar community. We assume this was for power and control of the island. But how did this come about, who told him he needed to do this, get rid of the Delmar community.
We know Ben has never met Jacob until that point he stuck the knife in his chest, we come to believe this island master “Jacob” who lives in a cabin surrounded by ASH? But yet, Ben has never seen the face of Jacob , but Yet Richard as seen both of them from his past. We know Richard has never been seen in the Cabin by himself or with Ben. Ben usually goes alone. Its funny how Ben also never mention he saw Jacob to Richard. But, yet Richard allows Ben to be the defecto leader of the island supposedly in the name of Jacob.
We know Ben saw his mother, Richard saw his wife and Locke was told by John Sheppard he must die. At some point in the past MIB had told Ben he could summon him to defend the island. As long as MIB(who we know is the smoke monster) kept the illusion, ben following him instead of Jacob . Everything was going MIB’s way, until the death of Ben’s daughter. Ben was so stricken that he chose the island over his daughter he was susceptible to temptation, NOW MIB that lying, backstabbing , bushwhacker has to do is push Ben’s anger alone towards jacob by appearing as his daughter..
“Ben saw his daughter underneath the temple and was told to follow Locke or else I will kill you.”
And now Miles told Ben, Jacob thought you would make another choice.. At first he choose MIL, but when Lana said she would have him, He then choose Jacob..(at least that what it appears)
That’s my theory! Wacky like Jack’s… Love your show

Jacob recognised the dagger, so was protecting himself.
MIB could have caused the storm happen in an attempt to stop them from coming; or they could have passed through a time anomaly, the wrong bearing, the same one that makes day turn to night and vice versa.
Latin was long the language used by the enlightened class - the entire biological species system, for example, is in Latin - and was developed largely in the 1800s, which is reasonable.
You've never seen a '60s hippy? It was the time.
I'm guessing you didn't watch TV prior to the 2000s? Sometimes, a great story is just that, and is independent of of everything else. In this case, it's not only a great standalone story, it's brilliant in context and at meeting expectations. Serial drama this complicated is quite new to mainstream TV. I was a big X Files fan in the '90s, and rewatching it... it sucks.
Natural accumulation of people who haven't failed. Jacob wants people there to prove MIB wrong, and he has an intermediary; if they're not killing each other, they'll of course form a society of sorts. It's only once things go awry that Jacob starts thinking, I better find a new guy soon, cause the Sh*t's about to hit the fan...
Coming right out would play right into Jacob's hands. He goes for Seth, thinking it's Lapidus; then perhaps realising he's got the wrong guy, decides to take a more cautious approach.
If he came out swinging, any survivors would be driven immediately into Jacob's camp - he doesn't want that, I guess.
As for the Black Rock guys, they were all bad, and beyond redemption. MIB left Ricardos until he was at his weakest moment, then swooped in to manipulate him.
I thought this was obvious...
Richard, obviously. Ilana keeps saying he knows what to do next, and without a leader, the obvious thing is to PICK SOMEONE.
Nope. It's course correction, the key to the show so many have forgotten about. They're not ageless, they just can't kill themselves, because that's not what is supposed to happen. Variables can change that, but you can't be a variable to your own destiny. This was shown not only with Desmond and Charlie, but Michael - who can't kill himself - and Hurley, with Dave - and Jack, off the island and depressed.
Sorry for the long 1st post. Read a lot, and I had to say something...

MIB continues to be simply called "the man in black." interesting, that. maybe it's my bunny ears reception, but I thought in the bottle-smashing scene he was wearing navy blue. Jacob himself is wearing a sort of pale tan color. ...since we have both the phrases "black and white" and "light vs. dark" I figured maybe they're intentionally not literally wearing 'white' or 'black'.

That makes sense, but I'm curious as to why Jacob would have made the Statue his home. there was the whole 'is that smokey on the water' but it turned out to be the sub. I'm thinking we're silly to have even thought that--we've never seen the smoke appear and kill anyone beyond the tree line...it's like he can't slither out onto the sand and into the water...off the island. Maybe this is why Jacob lives on the beach...nice and safe.

Why did he pick her to protect the candidates? More questions yet again... ;D here's what I'm thinking: she's Eve...the sinless woman, one like Jacob has been looking for the whole 'Adam and Eve' thing. ...but Jacob needs one more, a man (Equivalent to Adam). ...maybe their perfect child will be the new Jacob? this would resolve the 'which Kwon' thing--Ilana doesn't know what's going on (clearly), but Jacob does, and Jacob has no need to write down the name of which Kwon (where as manipulative man-in-black has good reason for being vague/deceptive about it), he knows the Adam to her Eve can only be a man.

is "Richard" a Spanish name? Did we see the word "Alpert" used in the flashback? If not, then maybe Alpert was just a new last name Jacob recommended, just like changing his first name from Ricardo to Richard.
