Hey Jay, I don't think this has come up on your podcast, but I think there might be more than one smoke monster. Two reasons: 1. Dead Lock can no longer transform into another human form, yet in the season 5 episode, "Dead is Dead", Ben is confronted by Smokey in the form of Alex. 2. Dead Locke appeared to be unaware that Ben had to follow Locke's orders and was relieved so that he wouldn't have to convince Ben to kill Jacob. Of course he could have been lying and pretending to not know. Thoughts?

You should listen to the last Official Lost podcast. Damon explains why and when Smokey could no longer transform into anyone but Locke. And yes, Man in Locke was clearly pretending not to know because he was still pretending that he was Locke at that point. Besides, in Recon, Man in Locke tells Sawyer, "I am the smoke thing" not "I am a smoke thing" or "I'm one of the smoke things." There's only one.

Way back in Season 2 - maybe 3 - I put up a theiry somewhere on these boards that I thought that there were 2 Smoke Monsters - but for a very different reason.
I had a hard time believing that what Locke saw during "Walkabout" was the black Smoke Monster who is rambling around the island in the shape of John Locke. I don't care how blown away you are that you can walk again after 4 years - but Old Blackie just doesn't seem to me to be the "Eye of the Island" that Locke looked into and "it was beautiful" - but then again he was willing to have it drag him down a hole.
What I thought at that time was that there was a White Smoke Monster. It just made sense with all of the Black and White stuff going on - the Backgammon pieces - the stones Jack found with Adam and Eve. And who knows - maybe we will see a White Smoke Monster do battle with Old Blackie at the end. That might be fun.
One other this that they almost HAVE to show Blackie Locke turning into the Smoke Monster or vice versa - THAT would be cool.

Macris: Thanks, I didn't realize an explanation was already out there as to why and when MIL couldn't transform. I've only listened to Jay and Jack...I'll check out that podcast---would be interesting to hear Damon's take.
Uncle Igmar: I don't remember that episode all that well (it's been a couple of years since I've seen it), but yeah the nature of the smoke monster (MIB) doesn't seem to agree with something beautiful as Locke put it. The duality theme is really strong throughout the show. A white smoke monster might then appear to be a natural path for the writers to take, but they've proven very good at throwing us a curve ball. If not a white smoke monster then perhaps there's a different manifistation altogether. But with only 8 episodes left, probably not.
