Okay guys. I just had a wild and crazy theory about the Sideways world that came to my mind out of nowhere. It might be totally wrong, but it's wild and crazy so I thought I'd share it.
Okay, so remember Flashes Before Your Eyes, when Desmond flashed back in time to before he made the decision to leave Penny? That time traveling experience ended with Desmond realizing that he wasn't crazy and that he could change the past if he wanted to.
Now, I realize he woke up back on the island after telling the bartender to duck and getting clocked in the head instead, but what if he also continued to exist in the other timeline and decided to go ahead and marry Penny after all. Then he never would have gotten to the island, never would have been there to press the button, and as a result the island sank.
So to summarize, the Sideways timeline was caused by Desmond realizing he could change things and deciding not to leave Penny in Flashes Before Your Eyes.

There are a couple of problems with this, of course. One is why things would be so different throughout the lives of the Losties if the island only sank within 3 years of flight 815. The other thing is why Desmond wouldn't have recognized Jack if he remembered the island. But he could have been feigning ignorance.

I don't agree with this theory, but I do agree that Desmond will play a major role in how the timelines are connected, and I wouldn't be surprised if "Flashes Before Your Eyes" can give us clues into how exactly that is. But yeah, right now I'm stumped
