We know that MIL is Smokey.
We know that there is a security fence around New Othertown.
Smokey was unable to move past the barrier when he tried to get Juliet and Kate.
The reason why MIL was able to enter and talk to Sawyer was the security fence was not on.

There's the place Ben went to summon Smokey, but Smokey didn't come from that hole or else it would have destroyed the house.

No i'm talking about where Eloise, Richard, Jack, and Sayid went in the stream got the bomb and then came out at Horaces house in 1977. I guess I was just assuming Ben and Horace lived in the same house, being leaders.

They'd need to know the code first. With Hurley having lived in Dharmaville, wouldn't he know the code? Well, assuming they hadn't changed it since 1977? LOL |

We did see Patchy do through the security fence while it was active he did look dead but did survive. Patchy ended up being an 'other'. Richard said that the fence didn't affect them the way it affected everyone else. I figured that was why Patchy survived. I do wonder why it didn't affect them. |

We know the fence as different levels of force. It's conceivable that what Mikhail suffered wasn't enough to kill him, just severely maim him.

Yeah, that's what I always figured. The "sonic fence" seems to defy any scientific basis, as far as I know. Are there any kind of sonic wave generators anyone knows about that can be linked to form a barrier that will upset our inner ears like this? Even remotely? It also seems pretty clear that it was specifically built to keep out wild life and/or Smokie, as we've seen that anyone in the know can simply plug their ears to avoid the deleterious effects...

A fact we definitely know is Juliet turned off the fence and she and Kate went through it without harm. Smokey attempted to but was unable to breech the fence. Even though we may not understand how the fence works we do know that when active smokey can not go through the fence (the assumption is that he could not go above or below it or around it because then smokey would have gotten to Juliet and Kate.
Another fact about the fence is that when it is active humans like Kate, Sayid and Locke were able to climb above it and get pass it.
The fence was specifically constructed to bar smokey.
The only thing that could foil this is that Sayid has the ability to reconfigure electronics so even if it is set, Sayid being on smokey's side can disable it, that is if Sayid still has that ability after being contaminated.

Richard also has the ability to get through the fence cause in 1974 when sawyer killed the others he said that fence can't stop me
