I have to say that after all this time one of the episodes that stands out in my mind and that has bothered me is the Dave episode. It's still the ultimate mind !@#$. Has there been any info or discussion from or among D & C of the asylum characters and their place in season 6, if any? Or thoughts here?

I haven't read any Darlton interviews on anything about the other characters at the asylum except Libby and all the blah-di-blah they get from fans about her.
It'd be interesting to hear of Sam Toomey or someone again, but I don't really feel it's necessary. And I'm happy just riding off Dave as an Island-created hallucination for Hurley to help him "progress."

"Dave" was definitely a product of Hurley's mind - I don't even necessarily think he was island generated - since he existed while Hurley was at Santa Rosa. Dave only ever showed up when Hurley was under great stress - right after the accident with the deck collapsing and just after he had broken the grip food had on him (emptying out his stash) and the pallet showing up.
Dave was Hurley's subconscious telling him it was OK to eat - not believing Libby could/would ever be interested in him, etc.
It would be cool to maybe see Sam and Lenny in their South Pacific listening post hearing the numbers for the 1st time - to see exactly why Libby was committed to Santa Rosa (something like doing something crazy - maybe giving away a yacht to a total stranger? ) - it would be cool to see where Richard Alpert actually came from and things like that - but they really aren't necessary to the story. What would be really cool is to see how the Smoke Monster was created - or what it really is - that really is a necessary part of the story - probably won't find that out until the last 5 minutes of episode 17 of Season 6 LOL

Darlton did explain Libby as having lost her husband, having a tough time with that so she committed herself, and then later she got out and feeling ready to let go, helped Desmond by giving him her yacht.

I think Dave may have been created by the island. The island seems to know everything about every character and uses things from their past like Sawyer speaking as Kate's father in season two and many other cases.
