Thought someone might have scoured the Internet for an answer to this, but I didn't see it anywhere... turns out the Los Angeles World Airports web site has this very question in their FAQ. Boring answer: it's a placeholder to make the old two-letter abbrevation into three letters. X must've been the default letter to choose since it seems to be pretty common... and it looks/sounds cool. Since the X doesn't mean anything.... does that mean X marks nothing? Hmm...
