I'm rewatching Season 1 and these might be one a series of old questions I'll post that have long since been answered, but...
If the island cures cancer, allows Locke to walk, then why does Charlie suffer withdrawl from heroin? Why does Shannon have asthma attacks? Were they not chosen?
Why was Rousseau -- as far as we know -- never bothered by DWG? Did she offer him/it no opportunity to get at Jacob? He seems to dispose of other people he encounters and has no use for.
Is there a parellel to be drawn between Jack running out of the forest in the pilot and Goodwin running out of the forest -- and that being a clue to Ana Lucia that he must be an other. The tail section did land in the water, so it's not an exact match, but could this be a very -- probably way too subtle -- clue that Jack is not Jack? Never has been?

That would be interesting since Damon and Carlton have told us that Jack was supposed to die in the first episode (or very early on) in their original plot. That would be like them to toss a hint in like that, but for now, that sounds like a crazy crackpot theory. Could be make for a fun conclusion though.
Re: 1st question, I think that's part of the whole sacrifice/reward thing the Island does. Locke gives his faith in return for being able to walk. Perhaps losing Alex was the sacrifice necessary for Rousseau to be left alone? I expect the Island's logic will be revealed by the end since that's more or less what this plot circles around.

The Island could just be out after its own gain, or be trying to help people in the right direction. Healing Locke gave him direction. Having Charlie have to suffer from withdraw helped him in the right direction.
Danielle's crew all started acting "weird" before they died and she had to kill them off one by one. Maybe their weirdness was DWG using them one by one. But Danielle killing them kind of got in the way and DWG just gave up in the end. Just a thought.
I'm not sure on the parallel. Mainly because Bernard also came out of the woods since he was stuck in a tree. And really, there's just not anything else to point at Jack not really being himself.
