The explanation would be "The Bloody Snow Globe" if you will. What keeps the island unseen from the rest of the world - call it a dome - also messes with time dilations and the way that white light is defracted - kind of like a prism. .

Or a Faraday Cage? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cageMaybe it's some strange, Earth-made one, which would make the light not "scatter right" because it's hitting this cage and scattering instead of coming in direct beams. |

Darlton better explain what wasn't explained on the show afterwards....
Personally, though...I'm okay writing Libby off on just becoming very depressed due to her husband's death shortly after giving the boat to Desmond and therefore sought help in the mental institution.
