i really thought that hurley was going to be the person that came up with the number in the first place, but we see they already had them. why are the on the hatch door.

I couldn't quite catch what he said (the guy asking what numbers to put) but I think he asked "what formula" to put on or something, and formula is another word for equation...(if you know what the #s are at all you'll know what I mean)
That may not be what he said, but I'd be fairly certain thats why THOSE numbers are on the hatch. Why ANY numbers need to be on it, well you've got me. Unless the numbers can be changed merely by being stamped on a metal door near a highly electro-magnetic area (which seems unlikely), then who knows. Maybe whoever designed it (radzinsky or someone back in ann arbor) just felt like putting them there for memory? because it's cool? it's not like there's other hatches on the island it needs to be differentiated from........... ..... ... (enough dots?)

there are stations/hatches every where ,we just never saw if there were number on them. when did they put the quarantine sign on that hatch door.

Well, I don't think there ARE numbers on every station door (and hatch is originally locke's word for only that one, so it doesnt really apply to any other station). I think it has to do with the swan's purpose, and the relation to the valenvetti (spelling?) equation/numbers
And Im guessing after the incident (or during, but after it starts)

He said it was the serial number, like it's just another coincidental occurence of the numbers.

1975 is apparently when Chang talks about the Valenzetti Equation from the ARG, so at any rate, the numbers are already known in that sense.

Just because the guys working to build the hatch dont know what it is doesnt make it a coincidence- he just thinks its a series of numbers like some serial number or something, because he's just a laborer.

Are the numbers coordinates? But not on a map, but in the Space/Time continuum? like a 4-D map of space and time?
I forget... how did the dude that Hurley knew from the hospital learn the numbers? was he in Dharma?

I forget... how did the dude that Hurley knew from the hospital learn the numbers? was he in Dharma? All about Leonard to remind yourself... If you go by the Lost Experience, The numbers are "the numerical values to the core environmental and human factors of the Valenzetti Equation." But I like the idea of it being a time. Very Donnie Darko.

No, he (Leonard) heard them in a loop in a radio transmission while stationed at a listening station in the pacific with Sam Toomey, the dude from Australia who blew his brains out. Here for moreDarn it, beat me to it! :/

Oh yeah. He was in the Navy or something.
Core environmental and human factors... I would say that space/time is a pretty core environmental factor!

One thing to remember about equations is that the things that can change are called "VARIABLEs" (like tomorrow's episode). and dharma is trying to change one of the Valenzetti numbers...
Dunno how much that will matter though, as opposed to being a partner episode to last season's constant (or maybe both facts work together? )
