If Ben was living with the others when he kidnapped Alex in 1987, how was he a work man for Dharma at the time (according to Horace) of the purge, in 1992?

we dont know if he was living with them,and we dont know when he was sent back to dharma.that a long time between the time richard took ben and when he grown up during the purge. so he must have went back to the dharma camp sometime right after he healed from his wounds. was horace still in charge when the purge happened , i think ben was just doing his own thing,going back and fourth.
