I agree, it's an automated system that is set off by potential threats. As Danielle said... there is no such think as monsters. The system has been set off when there is activity in particular areas. It could be set off by a large animal or a person. Perhaps Vincent set it off the first night? He was in the woods, close by.
The others (and Danielle) have lived on the island long enough to know how to evade the system.
Remember when Locke was caught in it? His foot was snared and he was being dragged back. There was a definate mechanical wheel or winch that was pulling him into the hole.
Danielle has been there 16 years, she is certainly not afraid of the security system, she's concerned about the others.
I think the security system is a series of nets on the ground that when sprung, trap the person or animal and there are also snares on the ground. When the net is sprung it sends the "threat" in the direction of the snares.
The other stuff (that caught Saiyed (sic?) and almost got Hurley) were obviously set by Danielle or perhaps the others. The polar bears... well they might not be monsters... they are certainly scary, but they are different.
Maybe the big nets are set to catch the polar bears? David ~

What do you think is down the hole, David? Do you think Locke would have been all right if Jack would have let the security system pull him down?

No I think he would have been toast, or rather bread crumbs. I believe that the security system was set up by Dharma to protect the project and the "lab rats" (those working in the hatch... 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 ENTER) from outside interference. Inside the "trap" hole is likely conected to the hatch, probably a series of tunnels.
I'm still pondering what would have happened to Locke... perhaps ground up into soylent green? Which of course.. is people......! I don't believe he would have escaped unharmed. David ~

Soylent Green. What a creepy movie!
When they threw the dynamite into the hole, there wasn't anything still attached to Locke's foot when they pulled him back out. I guess it just released its hold, but still one might have thought the chain or whatever would have been blown off and still on his foot.

Something about it does seem like it's on a track, doesn't it?

Like you said, an Island Subway system with ventilation holes and invisible guardian air paranas. Maybe all the hatches (Oops. I mean Bunkers) are connected via subway.
