I don't have an idea here, but it's been nagging at me ever since Alpert said the fences don't work on his kind, put loosely. Any discussion on this, or ideas?

Well, if it's as simple as putting earplugs in, it's not that much of a stretch to think the Hostiles have somehow found out and gotten earplugs for everyone.

Poor Smoke Monster. He doesn't have ears, so the sonic fence-ness hurts him... *cough*

The sonic fence was not fully powered up when kate, sawyer, etc walked through. Otherwise, it would have had them all bloody like the russian dude.

I don't know...I think we might be able to figure it out once we know what the others/Richard Alpert ARE. It might be a two for one deal. Such as oh they aren't really there so the fence has no effect on them or something like that. Sometimes I wonder about gray areas on this show...like are you doing that for a reason (like you will tell us later) or do you think it isn't important?

The Others - and not Steve Austin (no - not the wrestler) - were the 1st with bionic legs. They just jump over it.

Didn't Kate just climb over it once?
Also, there is the matter of underground tunnels all over the island.

What about Amy's earplugs? I guess we're supposed to assume that the earplugs only work if the fence is set to low, that at it's highest settings earplugs won't protect you from the effect. From the effect the fence had on the Smoke Monster, I always kind of thought it was to keep Smokie out, but from how members of the DI act I guess it's to keep anybody or anything out. You know, speaking of the sonic fence, what the heck? Is there any kind of science that can actually back this concept up, even a kind of? Anybody know? I guess it's a silly quibble considering all the wacky stuff on Lost, but while I like the concept of the fence, it never did quite sit right with me.

After "He's Our You" some people wondered if the DI must have developed tasers, but the sonic fence is rather more...complex.

I guess it's a silly quibble considering all the wacky stuff on Lost, but while I like the concept of the fence, it never did quite sit right with me. Theremin, a Russian inventor, actually worked on sonic defense mechanisms around the WW2 era I believe. He did this while he was under arrest by the communists and forced into military research. He later fled to America and invented an electro-sonic instrument named after himself. Among his other inventions, Dr. Theremin is credited with the first electronic surveillance 'bug' (and perhaps its installation and use in the U.S. embassy). He worked also in diverse fields related to radio wave and frequency research, and security system work for the ultra-paranoid Soviets, but much of his work is shrouded in mystery for the latter half of his life. While a resident in the United States from 1927 through 1938, Doctor Theremin anglicized his name, from Lev Therman to Leon Theremin, and worked to perfect and market his musical instrument. He obtained a patent, worked with musicians to develop a body of music and performance on the esoteric device, and also arranged with RCA to produce units for sale.

You can buy one that you assemble yourself in a cute little kit that costs only 30 or 40 bucks. I watched a documentary about the creator and he was forced to invent all sorts of weird stuff, including research on a sonic fence. He also bugged US government buildings by hiding tiny, non-battery powered microphones in wooden plaques and trophies and having the Russian version of boy scouts present them to prominent Americans politicos as a sign of good faith and trust.
