Right now, ABC in my area is rebroadcasting old LOST episodes over night, and they've finished Enter 77 and are on to Par Avion. I was about to change the channel when a bunch of dialogue from Mikhail caught my attention. In light of what we know now in Season 5, I think it bears another look. Sorry if this has been brought up before!
There is a scene where Mikhail, Locke, Sayid, Kate, and Rousseau are treking through the jungle on their way to the barracks (cue Jack playing football with Mr. Tom Friendly). Here are the exact lines I'm referring to:
Kate: So how'd you get here? How'd you get onto this island?
Danielle: Don't waste your breath. Whatever he says will be a lie.
Mikhail: I was recruited when I was 24. I was approached by a man...
Kate: I didn't ask you when, I asked you how?
Mikhail: They brought me on the submarine.
Kate: So your people, they can just come and go whenever they want?
Mikhail: Go yes...but 2 weeks ago our underwater beacon stopped emitting its locator signal. There was an event. An electromagnetic pulse. It'd be impossible to come back.
Kate: Why would you want to come back?
Mikhail: You would not understand.
Kate: Try me.
Mikhail: I misspoke. What I meant to say is, you are not capable of understanding...
Kate [Irritated]: And why am I not capable...
Sayid: Kate.
Mikhail: Because you are not on the list.
Kate: What list?
Mikhail: The man who brought me here...who brought all of my people here... he's a magnificent man.
Kate [Sarcastically Smiling]: If Ben's so magnificent, then why did he need one of us to save him?
Mikhail: Ben...Ben is not...I will try to make this as simple as I can. You are not on the list because you are flawed...[To Locke] because you are angry...[To Sayid] and weak...[To Danielle] and frightened.
Sayid: The more I learn about your people, the more I suspect you are not as omniscient as you'd have us believe. Don't speak to us as if you now us.
Mikhail: Of course I don't know you Sayid Jarrah. How could I? And you Kate Austen are a complete stranger to me. But you John Locke...you I might have a fleeting memory of, but I must be confused because the John Locke I know was para...
Danielle: Kate! Look at this. Over here. Come on.
Rousseau happened to cut Mikhail off at the wrong (right?) time, but I believe he was going to say the word paralyzed. If that is the case, where (or should I say, when) did Locke and Mikhail meet? Seeing as how the Losties have inserted themselves into the "past", maybe Locke crosses Mikhail during Dharma time? Does this even mean anything?? *headache*
Also, who is the "magnificent man" Mikhail is referring to? Richard? Jacob? Widmore? Christian Shepard? The list goes on and on.
I don't really have a brain for theory-making (I can't even remember what I did yesterday, let alone watched on TV 2 years ago ;D), so I would welcome anyone's thoughts if you want to speculate or look further into it. I'd love to watch the whole series over again to look for underlying clues, but who has the time?!
On a side note, I guess Claire's mom made it out of her deep coma to go to Christian's memorial service?! haha
