Didn't Charlotte say she was born on the island? (I don't have the head for details that the rest of you have.) In LaFleur, someone says the policy is to bear kids off the island, and that Amy's on-island delivery is a fluke. So was Charlotte lying/mistaken about having been born on the island -- maybe she just grew up there -- or was her birth at a time when that policy wasn't in place, or was it another fluke?

That is because Ben is not there. It seems that when Ben got to the island women giveing birth would die. Ben is the harbinger of death. His mother died giving birth to him so when ever he is around pregnant he causes them to died.
So no Ben on island; no pregnant women dying.

it was all the gas ben let off into the air that prob made women not be able to have kids. if charlotte was not born on the island she must have come as a new born.

Maybe the "incident" had something to do with why women cant have children on the island. Also she just said that she grew up on the island. Not necessarily born there. Im guessing she wasnt.
