When Jack and Ben were on the plane trying to get back to the island Jack asked Ben "how can you read" Ben said "because my mother taught me." I thought Bens mom died during childbirth. Did the writers mess up or is it a new mystery?

This question is on the Fuselage.com and the majority there seem to think it was Ben just being his usual sarcastic self.

Or maybe Ghost/Jungle mom brought some I Can Read books the next time young Ben saw her.
