OK, here's a bizarre thought. In 316 we saw our O6 plus Ben plus Dead Locke rearrange to play themselves , or at least themselves as they were on 815. Lots of crazy scheming to get them on the flight. But as we know, there was a lot of crazy scheming to get them on 815. So, it seems at least possible they were both representing an archetypal group, and that archetypal group is somehow drawn by the island. Put another way, it's not that the 316'ers were mimicking the 815'ers, but rather both manifestations were mimicking some other group, one they don't even know about.
If that's the case, what about Rousseau's crew? She is the preggers young woman. There was a musician with them (at least two instruments visible) - Charlie. Montand might be the cranky-pants smart mouth character - Sawyer. And? Well, actually that's where my idea runs out of steam, but I'm sticking with it anyway.

After this past episode, I'm gonna build on this a bit. (My zinger is at the very end) The Island is somehow trying to create (or recreate) a group of people. It 'attracts' that group. Somehow, other people know about this and use it to get people on the island, whether to 'satisfy' the island or to promote their own nefarious agenda, I don't know. That explains all the scheming to get the original lostaways on the plane, and to get them there after they have had certain experiences and are at a certain point in their lives.
Part of smokie's job is to eliminate those that don't belong. So the original pilot was the wrong guy and he got gobbled right away (remember that Frank Lapidus was supposed to be the original guy).
Ben knows about this group. Jacob told him. The 'list' he asked Ethan to make from the lostaways comes from trying to match them to the original group.
Ben knows they need a certain number of people on the Ajira flight 316 plane in order to match up with this group. So many have died on the island that he has to get every one of the O6 back. For some reason he knows this means he can't go back himself. Locke needs to go back as the chosen one, and that means if Ben shows up on the island Smokie will get him. And Ben really does want to save the island, even it means he can't fulfill his obsessive desire to be the chosen one. So he stops Locke from hanging himself. But then Locke tells him that Jin is still alive, and at that moment Ben realizes he can kill Locke and go back in his place. 'But wait', he says to himself. 'I don't know how to get everyone back' and just then, Locke tells him. Boom! Cue Home-Handyman Ben with his trusty extension cord.

Not bad. Sequentially, that does make sense. Exalt.

Yeah I really like this theory too, but how could Ben take Locke's place? They are really different people. I think he just knew the person Locke was replacing needed to be dead, but couldn't kill him or let him die until he knew how to get back (Mrs. Hawking).
I think the original group that needs to be recreated is the Black Rock Crew.

I think the original group that needs to be recreated is the Black Rock Crew. Yeah, I was thinking that myself. Or, in that devil-Lost way, it could be themselves.
