At the sight of Hawkins?
I mean she played a seriously big role in his flash back when he turned the fail safe key. He seems very unshocked by finding not only Jack and Sun at the well, but also Hawkins...
I don't think he actually ever met Ben from what I remember.

Well, they kind of cut the scene right as he had his stunned reaction and not much beyond that... just a couple lines of dialog by others. His mind may still be processing what he is seeing and trying to make sense of it, but it's still only a few seconds.
The next time we see them cut back to that scene (I would guess in the next episode) I think we ARE going to see him freak out and react about who he is seeing and the realization that she is Dan's mother.

When you watch an island that you have called your home for 3 years disappear, I don't think anything phases you after that.

I don't think he actually ever met Ben from what I remember. JLSK Oh yeah, he probably never did.... hmm... can someone confirm this? unless he met ben when ben was a prisoner of the losties the second time. on a semi-related note: You'd think Whidmore would warn Desmond about Ben and give him some kind of a description of him. Pen is closest to death that she's ever been in the show at the end of the last episode (given she and little charlie sailed to california with Des)

You're right about Penny being in danger. But would Ben associate Penny with Desmond?

I'n not sure this can be confirmed either way right now, but I'd be surprised if Ben wasn't aware of Desmond. After all, he would have been able to view him down in the Swan from at least the observation cameras in the Pearl. Besides that, Desmond was down in the Swan for a couple of years, right? And this was a time when Ben was leading the Others. I would find it hard to believe that he was unaware of the goings on inside a very important station.

But, did Desmond ever meet Ben? Of course Desmond knows about ben, but did we ever see them in the same place on screen? I just can't remember.

Desmond doesn't show until the sailboat arrived, which happens after Ben's escape. This is why Ben is so shocked that the losties have a boat when he hears about it later. Another example of Desmond being an x-factor.
Don't think they have met, but I would think Ben knows who he is both from the Pearl and from research to find Penny.

In the premiere of Season 4 when the Losties "pick sides" of who goes with Jack to get rescued and who goes with John to New Otherton, Desmond and Ben are both there. Ben was a prisoner at the time and there was already a lot of heavy decision making going on so there wasn't much time for Desmond and Ben to acknowledge each other. But, for what it's worth, they at least had the possiblity of being visible to each other then.
I can't wait for tonight's episode!!

I found that they never exchanged any dialouge with eachother, but had seen eachother. that is, before this past episode....
And he may still be figuring out who Hawkings is. Cuze, like when he saw Jack again, he didn't recognize him right away. It took a few.

I agree. Dez should have totally freaked out. He was extremely flippant in his comment "this woman wasted 4 years of my life". Didnt seem like he was suprised to see her in the least.

It does seem like he should have been more suprised to see Ms. Hawking. I kept waiting to see that pendulum hit him. Lol. I wonder what else the island needs him to do.
