I don't know why this suddenly hit me now, rather than after the season ended, but I had a question and knew that the only person capable of answering this question would be JACK (not Sheppard) and not the shower writers.
Sawyer whispered something in Kate's ear, jumped out of the helicopter and started swimming TOWARD THE ISLAND. Let's accept that you can survive that dive, etc.
1. Why was he swimming toward the island? Am I wrong in thinking that the freighter seamed closer to where the helicopter was than the island? Even if it wasn't, wouldn't you swim toward the freighter? Maybe because he fears sharks after his last encounter with the water? This just adds to the unlikelihood that he would jump in the first place.
2. What would Sawyer whisper in Kate's ear? At that point in time the thinking had to be let's get this helicopter on the freighter to get it refueled and patched so it can return to the island to pick more people up. Am I wrong? And with this line of thinking, what could Sawyer have whispered to Kate? Bring me some donuts?
Thanks for reading. Hope you can help me get through this.

This just adds to the unlikelihood that he would jump in the first place. More likely it's because the island is a HUGE target that is easy to see, even while bobbing up and down in the middle of open water, while the freighter is a relatively small target that can easily be hidden from view by even moderate wave motion in open water. If he headed for the freighter he would have to be VERY lucky to actually find it and get to it, while heading for the island is pretty much a guarantee that he's going to find it... if he is able to survive the fall/dive/swim. 2. And with this line of thinking, what could Sawyer have whispered to Kate? Bring me some donuts? He was thinking he very well might not survive what he was about to do, jumping out of a moving helicopter in open ocean and all, and there were some thing he wanted to have taken care of back home if he didn't. It most likely had to do with his kid that he made sure got the money while he was in prison. The one he's never really met. He is a good person deep down and told her to take care of something about the kid he actually cares about if he doesn't survive this. At least that's how I see it.

And with this line of thinking, what could Sawyer have whispered to Kate? Bring me some donuts? This is defiantly related to Clementine getting the funds that Sawyer left her. Maybe he even asked Kate to tell her that he is sorry. Kate obviously upholds to this because it causes Jack to leave.

Eh. . .
I originally had the same thoughts and am sure that's what the producers will go with, but it doesn't make sense for Sawyer to whisper that to Kate when he expects to be rescued. They didn't know the freighter was going to blow up. I mean unless that's future Sawyer with them and not regular Sawyer, there's no way Sawyer could know he's not getting off the island.
DRAGAVAN good point about the waves obstructing Sawyer's view. I didn't think of that. That's a really good point.

He doesn't know if he will survive the fall/swim back and be rescued with the rest... he most likely started what he whispered with "If I don't make it back..."

He whispered to Kate to find someone and tell her that he was sorry. You can tell from the subtitles on the dvd.
