Any Pitchfork readers out there? I just participated in their 2008 best of poll in the nick of time (completely forgot about it this week as I haven't been online very much)...was wondering if anyone else did too.

I participated. The best live act of 2008 was most definitely Portishead. They also had the best album of 2008. I can't remember who I answered for the rest... Best new act was either Fleet Foxes or Santogold... Microcastle was the second best album of the year...

Yeah, Portishead's Third was definitely one of the five I voted for in the Best Album category (haven't seen them live though)...I also liked Calexico's new album. Can't quite remember who else I put in the top 5. Wanted to put Stereolab in there for old times sake, but Chemical Chords, while not a bad album, to me didn't seem very original from their past work.
I can't remember at this point what else I voted for either, especially in the best live act category...once I started looking at the list I blanked on what acts I actually saw this year since I haven't really been to any concerts since SXSW in March.
It'll be interesting to see the results of the Poll.

Disappointed in album of the year. I'm not a big TVOTR fan by any means. Also disappointed that Mogwai didn't make the top 25, I thought their latest album was solid. The song of the year top 10 (minus TVOTR and Vampire Weekend) pretty much jives with my picks. I guess not enough people saw Portishead live (only one US show) to deem them best live act... although for me Radiohead was a close second. The best new act top 10 is very solid, all artists that I enjoyed the debuts of (especially Fleet Foxes, Santogold, Lykke Li, and Vivian Girls). THANK GOD Vampire Weekend got most overrated album. It definitely is. And anything Kanye related is overrated as well, especially his failed auto-tune experiment. Underrated list is solid as well, although the Of Montreal record doesn't hold up as well after multiple plays. My Bloody Valentine was by far the best reunion this year. Overall I think these are pretty solid lists, and this is coming from someone who usually despises anything Pitchfork-related.

I dunno. I'm feeling disagreeable today. I don't see The Raconteurs anywhere, and WTF with the Kanye West and the Lil Wayne. Ugh.
I didn't buy enough music this year to make a top ten list.

Especially Portishead, Fleet Foxes, (I felt lucky I picked up the last two copies of each at this awesome record store I was at while in DC)and Sigor Ros. I tried making a list like this but I know there's still music from this year (like every year) that I'll stumble upon in '09 or beyond. I'd add the Decemberists' Always the Bridesmaid's singles...I can't wait for what they bring in '09.

Wow, you know you are old, when you have no idea who any of those bands are. I have heard of Portishead, but that is it.

That's the bad part about having a good but not great album that was released in the beginning of the year. Some of my top 15 albums (Raconteurs, Raveonettes, Gnarls Barkley) were all completely shunned on the Pitchfork lists. And shhh... I didn't buy all of my music... (I buy enough to make up for it though!) I didn't vote, but I'd vote for several on this list, Steve. Especially Portishead, Fleet Foxes, (I felt lucky I picked up the last two copies of each at this awesome record store I was at while in DC)and Sigor Ros. I'd add the Decemberists' Always the Bridesmaid's singles...I can't wait for what they bring in '09. Yeah that's another thing... I didn't hear that Son Lux album until a little over a month ago, and it quickly climbed up to my favorites... there are still albums I haven't really listened to. And those Decemberists' singles are awesome, but I wanted to keep EP's and the such off of my list because there are so many that I like (Cat Power, Fleet Foxes, Animal Collective, The Raveonettes) that there was no way to fit it all on the list. Wow, you know you are old, when you have no idea who any of those bands are. I have heard of Portishead, but that is it. Haha, don't feel too old. A lot of that music is more under-the-radar type stuff.

A lot of that music is more under-the-radar type stuff. Yeah, what he said. Stop this nonsense about being too old, I'm around your age. Pitchfork covers acts that are less mainstream, although there are some glaring exceptions. It's a good resource for discovering new acts while also keeping tabs on old favorites. But you also gotta take whatever they praise with a grain of salt. Pitchfork writers are like the epitome of rock snobs. But some of their articles just crack me up. That's the bad part about having a good but not great album that was released in the beginning of the year. Haha, it's alright I don't think the RIAA is trolling this forum. I think Perfect Criminal touched on this point also, I usually discover I like a particular band or particular song later on in the year or the next year. It was only after one of my co-workers traded me some MP3's of Animal Collective, LCD Soundsystem and Battles that I really took time to listen to these artists. I think I traded him some vintage Guided by Voices for it. Do any of you frequent the KEXP podcasts for downloads?

I found it on itunes last year...its a Seattle radio station but they have a song of the day podcast where they make available one new song everyday for download. They have a decent catalog of songs. And they also have a live performances podcast which they update weekly. It's worth a look.

Yeah, I do the KEXP thing but I haven't refreshed it in a while. It's got that little (!) next to the podcast name, so yeah.. Gotta fix that.
