reasons why the East Coast is the best coast (from a Bostonian):
1) nature. yeah, west coast is warmer, but parts of it are arid deserts, parts are foggy and rain nonstop. wild fires run rampant, and no one knows when the next "big one" will happen. blizzards don't kill (unless you didn't pay the heating bill or can't drive worth a dang on the roads) and snow can provide some enjoyment (hello, winter sports! there is no "wild fire sports", or "earthquake sports" or "rainy, foggy deary day sports"!). hurricanes are bad, but generally survivable (plus, that's the south. no offense, but the north east is better than the south east, but that's a whole nother vs!).
2) education. even when you don't count the Ivies (which are all on the east coast), we still have almost all the best schools. we are a mecca of knowledge.
3) sports. come on, the Pats, the Red Sox, the Celtics, all champs (well, the Pats did mess up in the end, but how many other teams have a record like that). I'll even give props to the NY teams, the Giants and the Yanks *silently boos them*. the Lakers and the Chargers are the only half decent teams in the west and the Celtics beat Kobe down! and the Chargers...well, I don't want to upset handsome Jack!
4) overall stuff. better architecture, NYC skyline beats anything the west coast has to offer (w/ the exception of Chi-town, but that isn't the west coast anyways). we have great public transportation and aren't killing the earth and wasting gas sitting on the highways everyday. we're progressive and forward thinking when it comes to politics (well, for the most part). w/ the exception of Hollywood, most of the entertainment is on the east coast (record labels, book publishers, even film and television is a major player here). think of all the top TV shows over the years, where did they all take place? that's right, east coast!
I could go on, but it's no contest, east coast is much better than the west. sorry Jay

I agree with the poster up top! I am originally from Miami but a transplanted New Englander now....Who can beat sausage grinders at Fenway? Philly Cheesesteaks??? New York delis?? On food alone the East Coast should win! ;D

Nothing can compete with California weather. Ah... San Francisco....

I would choose the muggy heat of a Georgian summer over any summer in California. What's the point of having summer if it's not so hot you want to sit on a porch swing with some sweet tea and a fan.
Oh, and the west coast doesn't have sweet tea at every single restaurant, and that fact alone should mean that it is not worthy of winning.
Ah, and its true Jack and Jay, things do move slower in the South, but thats all part of our charm.

So, I'm a west coaster all the way - redwood forests, giant sequoia's, the beaches, the nature in general - just beautiful.
Not so much into the more extreme seasons on the east coast, or the humidity and such that come along with it. Love the fall in the NE - absolutely beautiful - not saying the east coast is all bad, but west coast wins for me.
In terms of sky lines and general cityscapes, I'd say San Francisco can hold it's own - it is an absolutely beautiful, fun city. San Diego is great as well - stunning bay. Los Angeles - well, nothing is perfect. The pacific northwest, up through the Olympic mountain range also incredible.
