So, for those who watched the preview of next week's show - what the heck was this about: Horace Godspeed - the person who brought Ben and Father to the island, who we saw dead, 12 years before. Is cutting something with an ax, talking to John saying that he is dead and has been awaiting John's arrival for a long time. So, this is something very new - this seems to be the first time I can remember we have someone seeing someone who wasn't clearly a person from their memories/past. Perhaps Hurley fits into this as well, seeing Christian in the cabin. I have no clue what this means - is this a smokey manifestation? Is there something different with those who die on the island (or have their bodies on the island)? Is this tied to the whispers, which seem to often have the voices of those who have died. Looking forward to Thursday! JLSK PS If you respond to anything about the spoilered text/image, be careful to spoiler tag your response as well....

Just an additional thought - I think this may introduce a continuity error. If the purge only happened 12 years prior to 2004, then some timings start to break. For instance I've been assuming Ben got Alex as an infant around 16-17 year prior, given her age in the show. This would mean that Ben took Alex from Rousseau 4 years prior to the purge.
The only way I can rectify this is if Alex was taken by Ben and the Others and held with the others as a child, and the purge happened when Alex was 4-5 years old.

Being a relatively new member, one year now, I'm probably just missing some of the conversation about Dharma, but I'm not sure I understand why the timing of the purge and Alex's abduction are a continuity error? Could you please explain some of the basic points of what you're talking about. Also, just a comment on Smokey. Again, I don't know the details of why so many people equate bizarre manifestations of the dead with Smokey. I really don't wonder if this is an idea that so many have accepted that they're no longer willing to consider another theory. I don't mean you personally, but the general discussion of what the black cloud is: like the theory that it's nanobots, even though Darlton has emphatically stated--I've heard second hand--that it's not. I still don't think anyone has proved within the bounds of the show that we even have a remote idea what the Smokey mind-scan was all about. Perhaps the scan isn't to get the person's memories, but to determine whether or not that person is on the List and, if not, then they end up like Eko. And where did white smokey come from? Has that actually manifested? If there is a counterpart to the black smoke, I think it's most likely Vincent.

So, let's see -
Regarding the purge. Basically most people assumed that the purge must have happened prior to Ben "adopting" Alex, since she didn't seem to be around in the episode where we saw Ben gas DHARMA. If it becomes evident that the purge happened more recently, like when Alex might have been 4-5 years old, then it isn't necesarily a continuity error, just that she must not have been with Ben full time until being a bit older. Of course there could be other explanations for this, I just hope they address it somehow.
I think it is very up in the air what smokey is. The Yemi/Smokey killing Eko episode to me is the biggest link I've seen between these manifestations of people pulled from people's past and Smokey. If you remember when Yemi appears to Eko that very last time before he is killed, we also see a series of people appearing to Eko who he killed in a church. To me, I've always thought that this meant there was a strong tie between Smokey reading people's memories and it somehow being able to then manifest these memories in corporal form.
I am personally thinking that White Smokey is the same as Black Smokey. Just that John saw some sort of manifestation that he interpreted as beautiful somehow.
Again, though, just my take on it until we learn more.

so it looks like the old Dharma crew might get revenge on Ben? This could be very interesting. You can die on the island, but that won't stop your ghost? Or is this just Jacob or the island trying to tell or teach someone something.
I think it is MOST FASCINATING that Miles said they are there to for him < to get Ben > but Ben says they won't risk hurting Ben but will kill everyone else. That sounds like they want to control Ben or attain knowledge about what he knows about. I'm afraid the freighties think if they kill everyone else, then Ben will have to talk. Only 30 more hours...until my next LOST fix.
