Right,
man i love john from thingybobby. thanks for talking aboot it. maybe you could do a podcast for it?
secondy (and this might be regarded as a rant but here goes...)
in my opinion (from the music side of my brain) jeff buckley is one of the most overrated artists of all time!!
for someone who only wrote one half decent song i am shocked at his infamy.
his voice grates on me, he does that well gay wobbly voice thing that anthony and the johnsons man does. (of course this is my opinion and everybody has different tastes. i much prefer singers like rivers from weezer, the singer from the 60's band the zombies, steve malkmus (the guy from pavement), frank black. so i can't really use that as an argument really but i've written it now)
it winds me up that he's only really popular with "musos" and the same musos harp on about his carrer was tragically cut short and how huge he would've been if he hadn't died.
there are so many artists who have so much more talent than jeff whose carrers were cut short. i'll give you a couple.
1) Nick Drake - a genius born in the wrong era. commited suicide.
2) karen carpenter - again amazing but no one seems to mention her
3) mama cass
4) and obviously kurt cobain.
i think the tragedy of jeff buckley amplifies his music disproportionately. of course it was sad, don't get me wrong but i think he just isn't as good as people make out.
i like to think that i have a rather diverse taste in music ( as does everyone. actually i don't think i know anyone that says: 'you know what? i only like one type of music, everything else is rubbish!' )
when i was at music college a lot of my friends banged on about jeff buckley and in my defence i've sat through dvds, listened to all his album (singular) and live albums (plural) and that incredibly money grabbing sketches album. i thought it was wank.
but of course, that's only my opinion and knowing musos, i doubt anyone will agree with me. i just wanted to have a little rant and let the non musos out there know that not all musos dig the buckley and that (speaking as musician) he does nothing for me and don't be tricked by musos claiming he was a genius. he was average, then he died. simple as. tragic, but he was no genius.
if you want to hear genius check out NICK DRAKE!! (see link to wiki for more info)

NB- i'm sure there are more unsung dead artists who were also great that i've never heard of, please feel free to name some!!!!
