Yes, they're real actors, but sometimes they get WAY too carried away with hamming it up for the camera (for example: Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler). Doesn't mean they're all GOOD actors (ahem Jimmy Fallon, Norm McDonald) but they're real actors all the same

The SNL crews are not actors, they are comedians. You can’t call them actors until they show us they can perform in a dramatic role. Since they are on a show that only does comedies, we won’t know if they can act. Until then, I would only consider them as comedians.

of course they are actors, just because you dont do drama doesnt mean you arent an actor shakespear wrote comedies, so does that mean the people in those plays were comedians and not actors? I rest my case

I don't consider them actors, but if that's what Jay likes then that's the only thing that matters.

Of course they're actors. Ask any actor, and they'll tell you the same. They may ALSO tell you that the cliche is invariably true - that comedy is harder than drama. The two theatrical masks - the iconic symbols for acting - are TRAGEDY and COMEDY, for heaven's sakes! SNL have to learn lines within a day or two, and act off of cue cards more times than not, but that doesn't mean they're not ACTORS. Improv (which they rarely if ever do on SNL anyways) is a form of acting, and an invaluable exercise as well. But try telling actors like Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Jim Carrey and Tom Hanks that they weren't "actors" until they tried doing something dramatic, and see how they respond.
And Colleen's comments were right on the money (though you should check out Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love - I was shocked to see how good he was in that odd little flick).
