In listening to Jay and Jack's top ten list, I realized there was at least a couple of different definitions of greatness: People who can really act well vs. People who can draw you into seeing a movie. For me at least, the two lists overlap, but they are not the same. Here are people that will make me want to see a movie without knowing anything more about it:
Johnny Depp Cameron Diaz Kevin Bacon Peter Jackson (Director) Edward James Olmos Eliot Gould Judi Dench Olympia Dukakis Pete Postlethwait Denzel Washington Kevin Klein John Cusack John Malkovych Steve Buscemi
On the other hand, I recognize Meryl Streep and William Macy as great actors, but truth be told, I tend to avoid movies they're in. Not because of them, but because of the type of movies I associate with them.

Cool idea for a topic here. And you're absolutely right...there may be actors I acknowledge are GREAT actors, but I don't necessarily see their name in the cast of an upcoming film and think "Man, I've GOT to see that now!"
I'll also stick to the "current era", or at least actors who are still alive & working (otherwise I'll be typing ALL NIGHT)...
(15) GREATEST ACTORS:
Jack Nicholson Gene Hackman Morgan Freeman Anthony Hopkins Daniel Day Lewis Gary Oldman Johnny Depp Robert De Niro Paul Newman Tom Hanks Jodie Foster Sean Penn Ed Norton William H. Macy Paul Giamatti
(15) ACTORS WHO "DRAW ME IN":
Jack Nicholson Clint Eastwood Bill Murray Steve Martin (when it doesn't look like an awful film) Harrison Ford (ditto..though it's been a while!) Christopher Walken John Malkovich Steve Buscemi Gene Hackman Morgan Freeman Tom Hanks Paul Newman Vince Vaughn Guy Pearce Bruce Campbell
This is not to say there aren't people on the first list that don't make me go "Hmmm..." when I see their name on an upcoming film. Just not as much as the other ten listed on the second list.
Again, love this thread!

I kinda see what you mean, but why acknowledge Meryl Streep's greatness if you dont like the movies she's in?
my list (i'll condense it to 5) has actors who I think are great actors, great personalities, in great movies:
Walter Brennan Humphrey Bogart John Wayne Jack Nicholson Gene Hackman

Re: "I kinda see what you mean, but why acknowledge Meryl Streep's greatness if you dont like the movies she's in?"
Don't get me wrong, I've seen Streep in a few movies I like, but she is often in movies I don't want to see. They're not bad movies (Sophie's Choice), but, hey, I read enough wrenching, depressing things in the newspaper. When I go to the movies I want something a little more positive. But the fact that I don't care to see them, doesn't take anything away from them.
Perhap's my best example of this phenomena is Sean Penn in "Star 80". I've never watched the whole movie because it's just not my kind of movie, but I did see a scene in which Sean Penn's character goes from kind of puppy dog pleading to enraged-out-of-control in about two beats. Very frightening, very believeable, and I can appreciate the talent.
Another movie that falls into this category is "The Talented Mr. Ripley". Almost every performance in there is stellar, the cinematography is top notch, the direction is spot on, but the story revolves around characters who I loathed and really couldn't generate much interest in.

As I read the topic, I immediately thought of the great-yet-creepy Steve Buscemi, and then I saw he was indeed on markedman's very own list!

Robin Williams and Johnny Depp are two I can think of right now for me. There's never been a Johnny Depp film that I've seen where he isn't amazing and so diverse in his skills. And Robin is just a funny kid in grown up form
