For a director that is pretty manipulative and is way too sappy much of the time, I choose Close Encounters because it captured a fear of the unknown unlike any other movie I'd seen up to that point. Even though Jaws was suspenseful, we all know what a shark is, have at least seen pictures of one and know what they can do. Nobody knew what was in that ship!!

From the choices here has to be Saving Private Ryan. However why isn't Jurassic Park there or Raiders or the other many wonderful movies he's directed.

i have to vote for E.T. I like them all (well, i've never seen close encounters) but E.T. is so ingrained in my childhood memories. I cried when i saw it the first time... oh man heartbreaking. But yeah, E.T. getting drunk on beer: BEST SCENE EVER!LEX

Maybe not the ultimate Spielberg out there ... but the most important one for me personally ... and therefore my choice for the "best one": "Hook".

Sorry Jack, Jaws is WAY too scary for me... Cuz uhhh that kind of started my fear of sharks...I guess it was my fault though: seeing it when i was 9 years old... And sorry Jay, CETK i saw it when i was i think 6 and it FREAKED ME OUT! The mountain think *shudder* still creeps me out. So i had to go with ET. Great movie!

I used the Jedi mind trick on myself to make me believe that instead of hook it read Indiana Jones and the ROTLA. Try it, it works!
